In the Presbyterian Church in America, we only have three levels of church government: the session (the elders of the local congregation); the presbytery (comprised of all of the teaching elders within certain geographical bounds, along with ruling elders based on the number of communing members at the congregational level); and the general assembly (made up of the members of each presbytery in the denomination). While each congregation is not ultimately autonomous, its governing bodies are representative in nature. --Joe! |

Thanks, Joe, for the input on PCA (Presybterian Church in America). As you may recall, I was for some 35 years a member of PCUSA (Presbyterian Church in the United States of America) -- I spell out the names for the benefit of the untutored in Presbyterianism. By the way, having been more or less out of touch with the PCUSA for some years, I'm not quite sure that the synod holds quite the same position of governance that it used to, or that it in fact still exists. I know it did when last I sat on a session board, but even then there was some talk of doing away with it. Perhaps you or Steve can fill in the gaps on this. --Hank

Hi, Hank; Synods are still around in the PC(USA) though I'm not clear on their function. They seem to serve as a middle organizational layer between the 170 or so presbyteries and the national denomination. I'm due to be elected an Elder next Sunday so I'm sure I'll find out more during my training prior to ordination. Peace and grace, Steve aka Indiana Jones |

Steve, congratulations on being nominated to be a member of the session of your congregation. For what it's worth, I'll predict you'll be elected. I say this from the perspective of having been nominated and elected to the office of elder on two occasions and seem to recall facing no really stiff competition! It is a key office in the church, freighted with enormous responsibility, demanding one's very best efforts, and thus should never be taken lightly. May the Lord be with you so that your execution of the duties of this high office will be in the best interests of the bride of Christ you aspire to serve, thus to honor and glorify Him who gave His life for her. --Hank

Hi, Hank; Thanks for your good wishes. I'm afraid I may have sounded prideful or overly confident of my election. I should have said that I'm on a slate of candidates proposed by the nominating commitee. While nominations are accepted from the floor, I've never seen one offered. In my experience, the slate has always been elected unanimously. I guess that reflects either apathy or general agreement on the committee's work. I hope it's the latter. ;-) Indy |

You said: “In my experience, the slate has always been elected unanimously. I guess that reflects either apathy or general agreement on the committee's work. I hope it's the latter.” Act 6:5-6 And the saying pleased the whole multitude. And they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and the Holy Spirit, and Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas, a proselyte from Antioch, whom they set before the apostles; and when they had prayed, they laid hands on them. In this example from scripture, all who were chosen were approved and confirmed unanimously as God’s choice. This shows me that people can make perfect choices and be in perfect agreement of those who God wishes to choose, approve and confirm if they allow God to work thru them. Man can never commission God’s appointment for anyone. Man can only recognize and confirm what God has already commissioned. If you are elected as an elder in your church, I believe it reflects an appointment from God that man has only recognized and confirmed. God bless! retxar |

Hi, retxar; Thanks for the note of encouragement. When asked if I would serve, I agreed immediately because I was confident that the nominating committee was composed of godly people who had discerned God's will. I'm looking forward to serving him in a new capacity. Peace and grace, Steve aka Indiana Jones |
