1 | What were the "marks of the Lord Jesus"? | Gal 6:17 | Searcher56 | 9064
Nolan ... I have problems with Zondervan, Ryrie, Nelson and others when they say it was Paul's marks that were (part) of his brand-marks of Jesus. In 2 Cor 11:23ff he talks about all he went through as a servant of Christ and did not mention the brand-marks of his Lord. Yes, verse 23 does say servant and a servant can bear the mark of his master. However, I think Paul is referring more his willingness to the mark he received at his conversion. Steve |

2 | What were the "marks of the Lord Jesus"? | Gal 6:17 | Makarios | 9086
Hello Steve! I'm not sure exactly where you are coming from here or what you "have problems" with, but I must say that this is just my own interpretation of the subject "marks of the Lord Jesus" and I am not always right and I may not have the 'best interpretation' of this verse. However, I will share with you how I see it.. I see the "marks of the Lord Jesus" being something that is physical and can be seen by others; (Gal. 6:17) a 'blemish' or scar on someone's body, which was inflicted upon them while the individual endured bodily harm or 'punishment' for speaking in Jesus' Name (Acts 4:18-20). Yes, Steve, 2 Cor. 11:23-28 speaks of the hardships that Paul went through. I believe that 2 Cor. 11:23-25 speaks volumes about the brand-marks that Paul endured for the Lord Jesus! Verse 23 states, "beaten times without number", Verse 24 states, "five times I received from the Jews thirty-nine lashes", Verse 25 states, "three times I was beaten with rods, once I was stoned, three times I was shipwrecked.." All three of these verses mention bodily punishment or affliction that occurred while Paul was acting as a servant of Christ! So I believe that 2 Corinthians 11:23 speaks volumes about the brand-marks upon Paul's body that he suffered while spreading the Gospel. 2 Cor. 11:23 even tells us a little about how Paul received these 'brand-marks'.. So I believe that 2 Cor. 11:23-28 has everything to do with the brand-marks that Paul suffered under persecution (and these marks being a 'witness' of that persecution). And we should also be willing to suffer 'brand-marks' in Jesus' Name, glorifying Jesus Christ and having joy that we have suffered because of Him, even to the point of losing our own lives for Jesus Christ! Why should we be afraid of death if we are in love with Jesus Christ? For suffering because of Jesus produces this reward: reigning with Him in heaven forever! Believe me: it is better to suffer for His Name and the Gospel than it is to sit back and not take a stand for Jesus! We must be on fire for Him, not caring about this world, but to share the Gospel and love of Jesus to everyone you come in contact with! What or whom do we have to fear? We have Jesus on our side! If we die because of persecution, then we will 'regain' our lives in Paradise, forever reigning with Him! Nolan |
