1 | Quench the Spirit until extinguish? | Gal 5:17 | TheCurtMan | 116312
New Creature, Please forgive me if I'm misunderstanding your post, but is it possible to 'completely' quench the Spirit until it is completely extinguish?? You said, "It is the Spirit of love, and therefore anger, malice, revenge, or any unkind or unholy temper, will quench it so that it will withdraw its influences; and then the heart is left in a state of hardness and darkness." Once the heart reaches this state, is it possible for it to be restored?? If restoration is possible, then can it be said that the Spirit was quenched completely. If restoration isn't possible, then would that not contradict a number of biblical principles?? Then you said, “It has been observed that fire may be quenched as well by heaping earth on it as by throwing water on it; and so the love of the world will as effectually grieve and quench the Spirit as any ordinary act of transgression.” I really couldn’t get a “Yes” or “No” out of your comment, but from what I know is that when you use either water or earth to extingush a fire, when it is extingushed, for the most part, it is completely extingushed. Which is the reason for my question. Like I said, my apologies for misunderstanding your post if I did, but I am courious. The CurtMan |

2 | Quench the Spirit until extinguish? | Gal 5:17 | Ray | 116328
Hi TheCurtMan, When you responded to New Creature, you were actually responding to a quote that he made of Adam Clarke's commentary. Clarke spoke of the Spirit and spoke of "it". I wonder if before you continue on in your worthwhile discussion, that you might determine in your minds who or what the Spirit is in the verses under consideration. Here are what the verses say to my mind and you can respond from there. 1) 1 Thess 5:19, "Do not quench the *spirit, 20 do not despise prophetic utterances." I put "spirit" in lower case because I do not feel that it is speaking of the Person. The connection to verse 20 is a linking and perhaps equation of the spirit and prophetic utterances. We are to examine everything spoken and written carefully in order to know what to hold fast to and preserve. 2) Ephesians 4:30, "And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by [Lit. in] whom you were sealed for the day of redemption." I feel that a Person can be grieved but an "it" can not. I would leave the Holy Spirit in upper case showing the Person who can be grieved. 3) Other verses come to mind from Hebrews. Hebrews 3:14, "For we have become partakers of Christ, if we HOLD FAST the beginning of our assurance firm untill the end;" 4) Hebrews 6:4, "For in the case of those who have once been enlightened and have tasted of the heavenly gift and have been partakers of the *holy *spirit, 5 and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come, 6 and then have fallen away, it is impossible to renew them again to repentance, since they again crucify to themselves the Son of God, and put Him to open shame." I feel that "holy spirit" should be in lower case for this verse because it is linking the heavenly gift, the good word, and the holy spirit. This holy spirit should not be quenched or fallen away from, for if they do not hear (and be filled) with the word of God then they will shaming the Son of God. 5) Ephesians 5:18, "And do not get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation, but be filled with the *spirit, 19 speaking to one another in psalms and hymns, and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord;" From the heart, Ray |

Thanks for the advice Ray; I will heed it. What struck my curiosity was that a question was asked, “Does it mean we can fade the Holy Spirit until we extinguish it completely?” What I read as an answer was a quotation from Adam Clarke’s Commentary. I couldn’t get an answer to the question from the quotation. Which was the reason for my question. I now have the answer, but I didn’t then. According to the ‘Believer’s Bible Commentary’ by William MacDonald; edited by Art Farstad, this is what is said in reference to 1 Thess. 5:19, “The next four verses seem to deal with behavior in the assembly. To quench the Spirit means to stifle His work in our midst, to limit and hinder Him. Sin quenches the Spirit. Traditions quench Him. Man-made rules and regulations in public worship quench Him. Disunity quenches Him. Someone has said, ‘Cold looks, contemptuous words, silence, studied disregard, go a long way to quench Him. So does unsympathetic criticism.’ Ryrie says that the Spirit is quenched whenever His ministry is stifled in an individual or in the church”. William MacDonald tends to see the Spirit in this verse as a He. It even refers to His ministry. My John MacArthur Study Bible capitalizes Spirit in this verse. Even Matthew Henry refers to the Holy Spirit. “Christians are said to be baptized with the Holy Ghost and with fire. We must be careful not to quench this holy fire. As fire is put out by withdrawing fuel, so we quench the Spirit if we do not stir up our spirits. And as fire is quenched by pouring water, or putting a great quantity of dirt upon it, so we must be careful not to quench the Holy Spirit by indulging carnal lusts and affections, or minding only earthly things” I have always believed that the Spirit in this verse is in reference to the Holy Spirit. The question is, “Is it possible to completely quench the Holy Spirit?” Ray, this is not a debate. All this is my personal perspective on the matter. What I believe, and partly Why I believe it. However, I am very interested in this Adam Clark. Would you happen to know if I can read his commentary on-line, or do I have to purchase it?? The CurtMan |

Hi The CurtMan, I am glad that we were given by winstonchurcill a site to learn about Adam Clark. I want to discuss with you the commentaries that you have referred to and that influenced you to think of the Holy Spirit as being able to be quenched. I feel that they are actually speaking of the "spirit". I believe that they are translating the verse in their minds as "Do not quench His spirit." 1) Believer's Bible Commentary: "To quench the Spirit means to stifle His work in our midst..." His work is stifled. 2) Ryrie: "The Spirit is quenched whenever His ministry is stifled in an individual or in the church." His ministry is stifled. 3) William MacDonald: Refers to His ministry. 4) John MacArthur: "The fire of God's Spirit is not to be doused with sin." His fire is not to be doused. 5) Matthew Henry: "We must be careful not to quench this holy fire." His fire is not to be quenched. So these commentaries are saying that the Holy Spirit's work, ministry, and fire are not to be quenched. That is different from the Holy Spirit "Himself" being quenched. What 1 Thessalonians 5:19 and 20 are saying is that we should not despise prophesies. We should listen to a spoken revelation from God, we should listen to the written word of Scripture, we should even be filled with these spiritual words, and receive them with joy and thanksgiving to apply them to our lives for good. Ephesians 5:17, "So then do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the **Lord is. 18 And do not get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation, but be filled with the *spirit, 19 speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord;" 1 Thess 5:18, "in everything give thanks; for this is God's will for you in Christ **Jesus. 19 Do not quench the *spirit, 20 do not despise prophetic utterances. 21 But examine everything carefully; hold fast to that which is good; 22 abstain from every form of evil." Do you see the connection between not quenching the spirit and being filled with the spirit? From the heart, Ray |
