1 | Do we have to earn grace? | Gal 2:21 | EdB | 118225
Kalos I understand now! Let me say this if we have grace we WILL have works. If we don't have works then as James says grace is not really present. Works are NOT needed to keep or get grace, works come with grace. There are a lot of workless (so called) Christians that unless they change may well be like the man in the parable that didn't wear his wedding clothes and was asked to leave. EdB |

EdB, Yours is an almost Catholic analysis, by my reading. This from a second-hand Catechism of the Catholic Church I picked up recently. 2005: "Since it belongs to the supernatural order, grace escapes our experience and cannot be known except by faith. We cannot therefore rely on our feelings or our works to conclude that we are justified and saved. However, according to the Lord's words - "Thus you will know them by their fruits" (Matt 7:20) - reflection on God's blessings in our life and in the lives of the saints offers us a guarantee that grace is at work in us and spurs us on to an ever greater faith and an attitude of trustful poverty." 3 | Do we have to earn grace? | Gal 2:21 | EdB | 118265
Colin Don't tell Emmaus that he has been trying to aim me in that direction. :-) I really don't think it is Catholic doctrine but rather Christian doctrine of Grace reconciled to the truth found in the Scriptures. EdB |

Christian doctrine it is, EdB. Have you heard of the Catholic Theologian, Scott Hahn? Emmaus turned me on to him. Colin |

5 | Do we have to earn grace? | Gal 2:21 | EdB | 118271
Colin I said that tongue in cheek, mostly for Emmaus' benefit. I really appreciate some of the Catholic theologians in fact I was making notes in my Bible today based on the teaching of I believe Scott Hahn. EdB |

EdB, Cheap is good! In tape 1 Hahn briefly summarizes the shaky state of NT scholarship around Romans 9-11 by citing "expert" opinion ranging from Pauls' being "confused", to his being more "emotional" than "rational" to the exatent that his argument simply falls apart in a maze of OT citations, etc. The impression I get is that most modern scholarship has been either clueless or exasperated by this intensely labyrinthine passage in Romans. Hahn says he gained insight into he believes is Paul's underlying argument while reading from the early church fathers. Paul, Hahn discovers, far from being confused or irrational, is a genius of OT scripture, which he "deploys" with strategic and forensic brilliance within this particular passage. These tapes really opned up my mind to the bible. The study is way in-depth and more than worth the loot. I'm listening to it again this week. Colin |
