Greetings Friend! Just a quick note about you comments concerning the phrase 'in one Spirit'. It simply is not true that one must limit the phase to mean only the guidance of the Holy Spirit. The preposition and word used could mean several things. It could mean that the Holy Spirit is the one doing the baptism. Or, it could mean that the Holy Spirit is the medium being used for the baptism. But, there is almost no chance of it meaning what your post claims - that we learn about our need for baptism through the guidance of the Holy Spirit. In fact, you appeal to Eph. 6:17, but an entirely different phrase is used in that verse. Therefore, it cannot be used as an illustration of how to interpret the phrase in 1 Cor. 12:13. The fact that the verb 'to baptise' is used immediately prior to the phrase in question mandates that it be translated as either 'by one Spirit' or 'in one Spirit'. Hi Morant61 God bless you I posted this information which I pray to God can help with your concern about this verse and its true meaning. 1 Corinthians 12:10-16 -The Message- 4-11God's various gifts are handed out everywhere; but they all originate in God's Spirit. God's various ministries are carried out everywhere; but they all originate in God's Spirit. God's various expressions of power are in action everywhere; but God himself is behind it all. Each person is given something to do that shows who God is: Everyone gets in on it, everyone benefits. All kinds of things are handed out by the Spirit, and to all kinds of people! The variety is wonderful: wise counsel clear understanding simple trust healing the sick miraculous acts proclamation distinguishing between spirits tongues interpretation of tongues. All these gifts have a common origin, but are handed out one by one by the one Spirit of God. He decides who gets what, and when. 12-13You can easily enough see how this kind of thing works by looking no further than your own body. Your body has many parts—limbs, organs, cells—but no matter how many parts you can name, you're still one body. It's exactly the same with Christ. By means of his one Spirit, we all said good-bye to our partial and piecemeal lives. We each used to independently call our own shots, but then we entered into a large and integrated life in which he has the final say in everything. (This is what we proclaimed in word and action when we were baptized.) Each of us is now a part of his resurrection body, refreshed and sustained at one fountain—his Spirit—where we all come to drink. The old labels we once used to identify ourselves—labels like Jew or Greek, slave or free—are no longer useful. We need something larger, more comprehensive. Before I close this posting I just feel like saying this with no disrespect at all, just as an advice not just to you but every one that can get the chance to read this posting. When reading the Scripture we have to remember that the first rule of interpretation and understand the Scriptures is that the Scripture is its own Interpreter. We cant interpret what one verse says, some times we have to read the verses before and the verses after to truly get and understand what the verse that we have a problem understanding means. Greetings Jesus777! Thanks for the response my friend! First of all, I am not sure what point you are trying to make. Secondly, I am not sure if you understood the point I was making. :-) I wasn't 'concerned' about the meaning of the verse. I was concerned about the inaccurate information given about the verse by the poster to whom I was responding. My point was simply this: The Greek of 1 Cor. 12:13 does not allow for the interpretation that baptism is 'taught' or 'learned' by the influence of the Holy Spirit. Rather, the text indicates either one of two things. Either the Holy Spirit is the One doing the baptism or the Holy Spirit is 'that' with which we are baptized. The poster I was responding to was denying both of these positions, which are supported by the text. Finally, I would highly recommend that you not use a paraphrase for serious study. The Message may have it's place, but it is not a translation. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
