1 | I desire the gift of tongues how 2receiv | 1 Cor 12:11 | Faithful husband | 177608 | ||
I am a born again believer, and have been baptized. I a prayed, and desire the baptizm of the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongue. i do understand that this is only one of the gifts of the spirit, and that acoridng to 1 Corithians Paul states it rather that one have he gift prophesy which edifies the church, adn not of tongues which edify man(himself). I desire the gift of tongues that when speaking in an unknown tongue we praise God that He understands and it is a language spoken directly to Him. Will I miss the mark if I don't have this gift? and how do I recieve it? Thanks for your help. Faithful Husband |

You ask if you would be missing the mark if you dont have this gift? And how to receive it? I like you choice of words "missing the mark" if you show no evidence of speaking in tongue. Beccause, it is said we shall recognize them by their fruits: Mat 7:16 Ye shall know them by their fruits. And here is the reason why we look for those who bare fruits: 1Co 12:27 Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular. 1Co 12:28 And God hath set some, in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues. 1Co 12:29 Are all apostles? are all prophets? are all teachers? are all workers of miracles? 1Co 12:30 Have all the gifts of healing, do all speak with tongues? do all interpret? 1Co 12:31 But covet earnestly the best gifts and yet show I unto you a more excellent, way. So yes, you do very well to covet all the gifts in this list, because they are the best of gifts, and because then you will be shown a more excellent way!!! It is written to ask, and you shall receive: Joh 16:24 Hitherto, have ye asked nothing in my name ask,and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full. Luk 11:9 And I say unto you,Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. |

Scripture ... "But covet earnestly the BEST gifts" (1Co 12:31) ............................. It does not say ALL. Again notice that tongues is near the bottom. In the CONTEXT, while we should have zeal (covet earnestly) the BEST gifts, the Bible says "But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually just as He wills" (12:11). "All do not speak with tongues, do they?" (12:30) answer is NO, as with the other questions in this CONTEXT. No one gift is pssessed by all, and I doubt no one person has all the gifts. Each of us has our gift(s) for the body. |

Though God does say we are to aspire to the best gifts, it does not mean that we must aspire solely to just and only the first gift on the list. Nor does it mean that we will never be able to receive more than just one of those gifts. I would simply not do spiritualy, either, to accuse one persone of not having one of those gifts as being not in the Holy Ghost, nor would it be more ok spiritually to accuse one pesonne who may demonstrate having many of the gifts as being "more into the Holy Ghost". Because, it is written in 1Co 14:1 Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy. 1Co 14:3 But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort. 1Co 14:5 I would that ye all spake with tongues, but rather that ye prophesied for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh, with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying. 1Co 14:12 Even so ye, for as much as ye are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek that ye may excel to the edifying of the church. 1Co 14:13 Wherefore let him that speaketh in an unknown tongue pray that he may interpret. 1Co 14:15 What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also. 1Cor. 14:18 I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all 1Co 14:22 Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe. It is wrong for one persone to have one gift and then to accuse his bretheren of not having it. But there is nothing wrong in praying and edifying one's bretheren in Christ to aspire to a gift: Rom 15:1 We then that are strong ought to bear the infirmities of the weak, and not to please ourselves. Rom 15:2 Let every one of us please his neighbor for his good to edification. Rom 15:3 For even Christ pleased not himself but, as it is written, The reproaches of them that reproached thee fell on me. |
