2 | Should we ask God for the gift of tongue | 1 Cor 12:11 | prayon | 111618
Yes. Mark 16:17 says that "these signs will follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast our devils, and they shall speak with new tongues...." In other words if you believe you can have the gift of tongues. Acts 2 tells us that as soon as the people were filled with the Holy Spirit they began speaking in tongues, not some of the believers but all the believers (v.4). Tongues is for all believers and is a sign of being filled with the Holy Ghost. In all 5 cases of the baptism of the Holy Ghost in Acts ( Acts 2,8,9,10, and 19) every time the initial evidence of being filled with the Spirit was speaking in tongues. Kalos was right when he said that some gifts are given to different people. Tongues to be used in public is not for everyone. That gift is only for a few. prayon |

Scripture ... Mar 16:17-18; Acts 2:41; 2:27; 4:4; 8:14-17; 8:34-39; 9:5-19; 10:44-48; 16:14-15; 16:31-34; 19:5-7 ... DO NOT select one of the signs of Mark 16:17-18. All these signs were seen together. I believe it was a promise for a few - the 11. Only twice of the ten conversion experiences in Acts, did the new Christian speak in tongues: -2:41 ... 3,000 saved. The 120 spoke in known languages (2:6 ff) -2:27 ... many daily -4:4 ... 5,000 saved -8:14-17 ... Samaritans -8:34-39 ... Ethopian -9:5-19 ... Paul (tho he spoke in tongues later (1 Cor 13:1)) *10:44-48 ... Cornelius and his house ... they did speak in tongues -16:14-15 ... Lydia -16:31-34 ... jailer and his house *19:5-7 ... about 12 disciples of John ... they did speak in tongues Plus, of the rest of Acts, on Paul's missionary trips - we do not see tongues being spoken, tho I believe he may have spoken in the local language (1 Cor 14:18). |

The "signs", as stated in Mark 16:17-18 are not the same as the gifts that are bestowed on all believers, given at the discretion of the Holy Spirit. I do not believe that that has anything to do with the topic at hand.
5 | Should we ask God for the gift of tongue | 1 Cor 12:11 | Searcher56 | 111727
I agree ... and a point I have. Mark 16:17-18 is for a few - a short time.
6 | Should we ask God for the gift of tongue | 1 Cor 12:11 | Makarios | 111733
I believe that Mark 16:17-18 is applicable only to the apostles. But then again, one should not base any major source of doctrine on a passage whose authenticity has been so disputed.
