"Can the Holy Spirit dwell in sin?" "If we have the Spirit of Christ dwelling in us, what does He do if (when) we sin? Does He depart because God cannot dwell where there is sin?" "dwells. Refers to being in one's own home. The Spirit of God makes His home in every person who trusts in Jesus Christ. Cf. 1 Cor. 6:19,20; 12:13. When there is no evidence of His presence by the fruit He produces (Gal. 5:22,23), a person has no legitimate claim to Christ as Savior and Lord." ... "The body is unredeemed and dead in sin (see Rom. 6:6,12; 7:5; cf. 8:11,23)." ... "It is best to translate the word "spirit" [in Rom. 8:10] as the person's spirit, not the Holy Spirit. Paul is saying that if God's Spirit indwells you (v. 9), the human spirit is alive (cf. Eph. 2:5) and can manifest true righteousness (cf. v. 4)." The MacArthur NKJV Study Bible, pg. 1707. The Holy Spirit does not depart, but it is out of our sinful flesh that we continue to sin and be "imperfect." This does not mean that the Holy Spirit has been taken from us or 'departs' (Psalm 51:11). --Nolan |
