1 | But now...! | Rom 8:1 | Morant61 | 165152 | ||
Greetings All! There has been a lot of discussion about Rom. 7:14-25 lately, and this is good. It is an excellent study and worthy of our attention. One thing that I have noticed over the years as I have studied this topic is that chapter 8 seldom gets brought into the picture. It seems as though many allow the chapter divide (which is not in the orignal text) to end the train of thought at Rom. 7:25. However, Paul continues the discussion into chapter eight as well. Chapter 8 is Paul's response to the mournful cry of chapther 7, 'What a wretched man that I am'. Allow me to summarize Paul's descriptions of the person described in Rom. 7:14-25 and then compare them with what Rom. 8 has to say. Rom. 7:14-25 says of a person: 1) I am unspiritual - v. 14. 2) Sold as a slave to sin - v. 14. 3) I do not do what I want to do (ever) - v. 15. 4) I do what I hate instead - v. 15. 5) Sin is living in me - v. 17. 6) I delight in God's law in my inner being - v. 22. 7) I am a prisoner to the law of sin - v. 22. 8) I am a slave to the law of sin - v. 25. Now, I am convinced based upon Rom. 6 alone that Paul cannot be describing a Christian in this passage, but note what Paul continues on to say in chapter 8. The description of chapter 8: 1) I am set free from the law of sin and death through Christ - v. 2. 2) There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus - v. 1. 3) He has condemned sin in sinful man that the righteous requirements of the law might be fully met in us who live according to the Spirit - v.4. 4) We are not controlled by the sinful nature but by the Spirit if the Spirit of God lives in us - v. 9. 5) If we live according to the sinful nature, we will die - v. 13. How could anyone say that these two chapters describe the same person? Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

Brad, thanks for the encouragement. I just read your profile and you reminded me to add the following to my own: "I am married with two daughters, ages 22 and 23, who are both serving the Lord; my older is married with one child (just born on 12/21/2005) and serves in a local church while my younger daughter is in her third years with the FIRE School of Ministry in North Carolina." |
