1 | Why do we ignore parts of Moses' laws? | Rom 6:14 | Bruce Killian | 176951
Because the Law was associated with a covenent that was superceded by the new covenent. Jer 31:31 "The time is coming," declares the LORD, "when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah. Under the New covenant the apostles were given the authority to interpret and change the law. Matt 16:19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven." Matt 18:18 "I tell you the truth, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven. While the apostles never overruled any of the 10 commands except the modifying the sabbath from Saturday to Sunday. They ruled on the necessity of keeping the law at the council in Jerusalem in Acts 15:19-29 "It is my judgment, therefore, that we should not make it difficult for the Gentiles who are turning to God. 20 Instead we should write to them, telling them to abstain from food polluted by idols, from sexual immorality, from the meat of strangled animals and from blood. 21 For Moses has been preached in every city from the earliest times and is read in the synagogues on every Sabbath." 22 Then the apostles and elders, with the whole church, decided to choose some of their own men and send them to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas. They chose Judas (called Barsabbas) and Silas, two men who were leaders among the brothers. 23 With them they sent the following letter: The apostles and elders, your brothers, To the Gentile believers in Antioch, Syria and Cilicia: Greetings. 24 We have heard that some went out from us without our authorization and disturbed you, troubling your minds by what they said. 25 So we all agreed to choose some men and send them to you with our dear friends Barnabas and Paul-- 26 Men who have risked their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. 27 Therefore we are sending Judas and Silas to confirm by word of mouth what we are writing. 28 t seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us not to burden you with anything beyond the following requirements: 29 You are to abstain from food sacrificed to idols, from blood, from the meat of strangled animals and from sexual immorality. You will do well to avoid these things. Farewell. |

2 | Why do we ignore parts of Moses' laws? | Rom 6:14 | CDBJ | 176960
I find no evidence in God’s Word that suggest what you a claiming. You stated: “Under the New covenant the apostles were given the authority to interpret and change the law.” Is that some kind of a new revelation or just a different slant that you’re trying to establish? I think the following might straighten this up a little. Matthew 5:18 "For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass away from the Law, until all is accomplished. I would surmise that the previous verses would include the word “change” as well or is that being too presumptuous on my part? The binding and loosing that you quote in Matt. 16:19 is the fact that Peter knew who the Jesus was, and as the Messiah the Son of God He would open the way to heaven. i.e. Peter now had the key but he was forbidden to tell others “at that time”. Matthew 16:20 Then He warned the disciples that they should tell no one that He was the Christ. The only connection that the law has with Matt. 16:19 is the fact of being curse by it and Christ is the key to being set free from it. CDBJ |

Hi CDBJ, I know this is not relevent to the subj matter you are discussing... But you stated that "Then He (Jesus) warned the disciples that they should tell no one that He was the Christ." I just want to point out that Jesus told the woman at the well (John 4:24-26) that He was Christ. I don't know the timeline of this related to Matt 16:20. Do you think this incident happened after Matt 16:20??? John 4: 24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship in spirit and truth. 25 The woman saith unto him, I know that Messiah cometh (he that is called Christ): when he is come, he will declare unto us all things. 26 Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee am he. iktoose |

4 | Why do we ignore parts of Moses' laws? | Rom 6:14 | CDBJ | 176985
Greetings Iktoose, That was a very interesting and I had to do some research on that one. From what I could find out, Jesus was leaving Judea and making the trip North in John chapter four. There was another route He could have taken that was to the East which passed along the banks of the Jordan River. That was a route most often used by the Jews so they could avoid the Samaritans. The time period of the verse in John 4 could have been connected and be the earlier part of the same journey as described in Matt. 15 and 16, which ended up at its most northern point in Sidon. Here is an interesting thought that I found in, (BKC) From John 4:26 and the Fact of Jesus declaring who He is. (Bible Knowledge Commentary) 4:26. This self-declaration by Jesus Himself—I… am He (the Messiah)—is unusual. Normally in His ministry in Galilee and Judea (cf. 6:15) because of political implications, He veiled His office and used the title “Son of Man.” But with this Samaritan the dangers of revolt by national zealots were not a problem. From everything that I have found I would say that the encounter with the Samaritan woman in John 4, took place before the session with the disciples in Matt. 16. No absolute Biblical proof though, one way or the other as I can see. Again, good question, maybe someone else can shed some light on this; someone that has expertise on the travels of Jesus and can fit Matthew, Mark, Luke and John into the proper time frames. Have a great day, CDBJ |
