OK. That seems to balance the scales. And it occurs to me now that we will have solved this situation when we have learned to imitate the Savior. He knew who he was, and he was the Son of God. He said, "I am ...", "I am ..." and he said, "I am". And yet he called himself the Son of man. He was Master and Lord, and yet he washed the disciples' feet. He did not lack for confidence. Yet he was meek and lowly in heart. And we should be like that. May the Lord help us. Let his mind be in us that was also in Christ (Philippians 2:5). It may be that high self-esteem can be so effectively modulated by lowliness of mind that it does not get out of hand. Perhaps that's what Paul was saying. |

Nobel - Two engaging things about Jesus -- oh, there are many more! -- are His meekness and lowliness. Perhaps these traditional descriptions should give way to more contemporary ones, like gentleness instead of meekness (meekness to some people suggests weakness, and Christ was in no wise weak) and a winsome and humble spirit instead of lowliness. ..... And perhaps the term self-esteem as applied to mortals should be modified in some way so as to convey the affirmation that, while we are "fearfully and wonderfully made," it is God who made us, not we ourselves, and all honor and glory belongs to him, not to us. ...... I despise the term, "self-made man." Not only is it incongruous and oxymoronic, but it is a glorification of man and not of God. Perhaps it's simplistic to think (but I'm rather simple!) that this personality problem called low self-esteem can't be at least ameliorated by reading, marking, learning, and inwardly digesting the 25 words of John 3:16. And I don't know why the same 25 words couldn't also help lower the sky-high self-esteem of the boastful wind-bag who thinks he is the master of his fate and the captain of his soul. The words of John 3:16 remind him that, even though God loves him, he must believe in Christ or he will surely perish. ..... I've enjoyed this little series of discourses with you, have visited your web site, have read your posts, and tend to respect your work far beyond what my initial tongue-in-cheek posts to you may indicate!
