Jesus set the example. All Christians must be baptized: Acts 2:37 Now when they heard this, they were pierced to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, "Brethren, what shall we do?" Acts 2:38 Peter said to them, "Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. Acts 2:39 "For the promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off, as many as the Lord our God will call to Himself." Acts 2:40 And with many other words he solemnly testified and kept on exhorting them, saying, "Be saved from this perverse generation!" Acts 2:41 So then, those who had received his word were baptized; and that day there were added about three thousand souls. |

Acts 2:38 doesn’t imply or even state that you are saved through being baptized. The apostles had just been filled with the Holy Spirit, speaking tongues, proclaiming Gods word on each of their lips in different languages from several different places. The Jews (understanding what was said) were amazed and some even said the apostles were drunk with wine. But Peter said to them that it was nine in the morning and none of them had been drinking. He then recapped what had happened on Calvary and declared once again who Christ is, the God of all creation. Once this happened, the Jews were in awe and wanted to do something because of this great news and this great miracle that had happened before their eyes of the apostles speaking in tongues, many different languages but none their own. They asked Peter what they should do and he replied they should repent and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of their sins. And they will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. Peter wasn’t talking about being saved, it wasn’t the subject of the conversation. The subject was Jesus Christ, beginning with the astonished Jews hearing the apostles speak in several different languages of different places and then to the death and resurrection of Christ and because they believed what Peter said, Peter advised them to be baptized and repent for their sins. In Matt. 3:11, John the Baptist states that he “baptizes you with water for repentance.” He doesn’t mention being saved by this, but only that it is to for repentance. Emie |
