1 | Who or what is the (s)Spirit? | John 3:34 | Searcher56 | 147601
Scripture (Context) ... John 3:27-36 ........... Ray, God's morning to thee, I think it is the Holy Spirit, based on the context. Plus, the word "the". I doubt the spirit within man has the word "the" in front of it. Searcher |

2 | Who or what is the (s)Spirit? | John 3:34 | Ray | 147607
Hi Searcher, Good morning to you. I surmise that your answer to my question would be 6. I hear you saying that God the Father gave the Holy Spirit to Jesus. My question then would be "How much of the Holy Spirit did God give to the Son?" The NKJ says that "God does not give the Spirit by measure." The marginal note in my NASB says [Lit, for He does not give the Spirit by measure]. The second question would revolve around who is doing the giving. The NASB reads, "For He whom God has sent speaks the words of God; for He gives the Spirit without measure." Therefore the "He" is talking about "the One whom God has sent" and also about "God who gives the Spirit without measure." So is Jesus (who is God) giving the Spirit without measure? If it is Jesus that is doing the giving, who is He giving to? Himself? KJ, "for God giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him." From the heart, Ray |

God gives all of the Holy Spirit. It is us who decide how much of Him we use.

Hi, Searcher... Be careful here because you may be getting into areas of discussion that the forum guidelines discourage. But since you brought it up: We can "use" the Holy Spirit? On what Scripture do you base our "use" of any member of the God-head? In Him, Doc |

5 | Who or what is the (s)Spirit? | John 3:34 | Searcher56 | 147637
Scripture ... Acts 4:8, 31, 6:3, 5, 7:55, 9:17, 11:24, 13:9, 52; Eph 5:18 ... It may be better stated let the Spirit use us. I see sometimes there is a need to be filled, with to view that one was not. Some are always full of the Spirit ... He has full use of that person. Alas, methinks most of us struggle (Rom 7:14ff) and need another filling. Searcher |

Hi Searcher, I am glad that others have told you that we do not use God. But I think that it is important to note also that God does not "use" us either in the sense of controlling us. The triune God leads us and teaches us, but He does not control us. As far as my question is concerned, that is, how many nouns and pronouns are in John 3:34; it is important to look at the sixth possible occurance (KJ, unto him). So the question now is, does God give the Spirit unto Him or to us? And in the context of verse 34a, who or what is the Spirit? From the heart, Ray |
