Reading John6:60,66-67 The two miracles to prepare the disciples for the crisis.to me were the ones that didn't believe in what Jesus was saying,they left and went on there way. The ones that did believe he gave the spirit that gives life. No ones comes to me unless it is granted by the Father. Do I have the right meaning ? |

Sweet, Some; Romans Catholics, Lutherans, (some) Anglicans, hold to a belief, in one form or another, of the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist or Holy Communion, and believe that John 6 is about that. That teaching was a crisis of faith for many disciples who turned away. See: Matt 26:26-28; Mark 14:22-24; Luke 22:17-21; 1 Cor 11:23-29. Emmaus |

3 | John 6:60,66-67 | John 3:34 | Reformer Joe | 66183 | ||
Incidentally, some Presbyterians believe that as well. It was the position of most of the Reformers (the notable exception being Zwingli). However, while the Reformed doctrine of the real presence of Christ does find some support in John 6, most Reformers do not hold that Jesus was necessarily speaking of communion in that situation. And we don't hold that in any manner Christ's body is physically, locally present in the elements themselves, in the manner of transubstantiation and consubstantiation. --Joe! |

Hi Reformer Joe, I am of Reformed and Presbyterian background. If there is indeed a "crisis" of faith because of the doctrine of the real presence of Christ then perhaps we all can appropriate Luke 22:31,32 for ourselves. "Simon, Simon, behold, Satan has demanded permission to sift you like wheat; but I have prayed for you, that your faith may not fail; and you, when once you have turned again, strenthen you brothers." Personally, I believe that this is yet one more reason why it is more important for us to regard Jesus as a Man than a man. "How can this man [Man, NKJ] give us His flesh to eat?" was the question of the Jews in John 6:52. I say, let the Man correspond and agree with His flesh. This is spiritual food and spiritual words. Test the spirits and see. I see Jesus as the Bread of life. From the heart, Ray |
