1 | The "awful" Truth? | John 18:38 | Reformer Joe | 60304
They did have "power" at one time (I prefer the term "influence" myself) and we had such atrocities as the foundings of our most prestigious universities and hospitals and social service agencies. Very dangerous things, indeed. When genuine Christians hold sway (and by this I do NOT mean individuals using religion as a mask to legitimize things contrary to Christianity), the culture is transformed. Do you think Western civilization has made the lion's share of the greatest human achievements of the last two milennia in spite of Christianity? That would be a sore mistake, indeed. I would suggest that YOU take a look at the history of science and just about any other field of knowledge. Hint: if you are equating belly-button rings with freedom from oppression, then your view on life is pretty limited. And if you think that most/all Christians are out to ban Joyce, you would again be mistaken. Sadly enough, I would suspect that most modern evangelicals would not even be able to tell you who Joyce is. I can tell you with a great deal of certainty that my public high-school students of whatever theological stripe sure couldn't. Again, I think you missed the point of the piece. The terrorists last year did not commit their acts simply because they were wholeheartedly committed to something; it was the object of their wholehearted commitment that influenced them to do what they did. Christians are called to be wholeheartedly committed to Jesus Christ as revealed in the Bible, and to influence the culture around them to the glory of God. However, God has also established moral boundaries and means for doing so which is in keeping with His own nature. Too often people forget that the ends do not justify the means in a Christian world view, but that does not mean that the exclusivity of the world view itself is at fault. A belief in religious and moral absolutes is not the problem. Belief in FALSE religiously and morally exclusive statements is what leads to wrong actions. --Joe! |

You think Christians only had "influence"? They had POWER ... ABSOLUTE power... the rawest of power....for over 1500 years!!! Influence might just be a tad of an understatement. Don't know much about history (wasn't that a song) but progress for the Western world and the Muslin World in the Arts and Sciences was the same until the "age of enlightenment" in the 18th centry. The enlightenment freed the West from "religious" control of cultural and intellectual life. Science was not burden by theology . This resulted in the beginnings of the modern world and culture. All science and culture in the muslim world is even now filtered thru a book, the Koran. They are are still awaiting their age of enlightment...ironic isn't it? I do trust God and I have faith in his promises and his truths. But I don't trust Zealots of any kind....even Christians...they're still human...too much room for error, ego and pride. I don't understand why Mr Wilson thinks he shouldn't be challenge if he saids he has a monopoly on the truth. What does he expect people to do when they hear such a provocative statement, genuflect? |

Ok I admit it my history is flawed. The church never had any real power: only influence.
