1 | Messiah's name in OT period? | John 1:1 | kalos | 111471
Emmaus, Hank, Makarios, Morant61, EdB and anyone else who cares to reply: I believe with all my heart that the Son of God, the Logos (John 1:1), is eternal, that he was in the beginning. But I sincerely would like to know: technically, when did Jesus become Jesus? I.e., would it be technically correct to refer to the Son of God in the Old Testament as Jesus, since he was not named Jesus until after his incarnation, his birth? Again, I am not doubting the eternality or deity of the Son of God. I am just wondering, is it correct to refer to him in the OT period as Jesus, Messiah or some other name? Thank you in advance for your help. --kalos |

2 | Messiah's name in OT period? | John 1:1 | Hank | 111537
Cherished brother Kalos: Moses said to God, "I am going to the sons of Israel,...they may say to me 'What is His NAME?' (caps mine) What shall I say to them?" ...... God said to Moses, "I AM WHO I AM." ..... These words in all capital letters relate, of course, to the tetragrammaton YHWH, the covenant name of God. Did this revelation of His name to Moses mean that God's name was not YHWH before He revealed it to Moses, as recorded in Exodus 3? ..... Similarly, Matthew 1:21,22 establishes the fact that an angel (messenger of the Lord) relayed the command of God that the Christ Child should be called Jesus. The wording is very precise: "you shall call His NAME (caps mine) Jesus." Did this revelation of Christ's name to Joseph by the angel mean that the name of the Son of God was not Jesus before the angel revealed it? Even though the people who lived on earth before God revealed His name to Moses did not know that His name is YHWH, and even though the people who lived before the Advent of the Messiah did not know that His name is Jesus, that is no argument that God's name has not always been YHWH or that the Messiah's name has not always been Jesus. .... "God highly exalted Him and bestowed on Him the NAME which is above every NAME, so that at the NAME of JESUS every knee will bow, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth." (Philippians 2:9,10). (all caps in NAME and JESUS supplied for emphasis) .... In summary, I see no reason whatever not to refer to the Messiah of the Old Covenant by His name that is revealed in the New. For it is this wonderful Savior, this Messiah, this Jesus, who is the same yesterday and today and forever. (Heb. 13:8) --Hank
