1 | Why related it to the feeding of 5000 | Mark 6:52 | azurelaw | 220341
Why did Mark specifically make this remark "for they had not gained any insight from the incident of the loaves...". How significant was the miracle of the incident of the loaves in assocation with their situation on the sea when they saw Jesus walking on it and later on the sea calmed after He was onboard. Similar situation happened before (Mark 4:35-41). Why did Mark not associate this incident (Mark 6:45-52) with Mark 4:35-41, but recalled the feeding of 5000 instead. P.S. I understand the disciples were hard hearted. My point is just not understanding why Mark (John) made such association with the incidents. Thanks for your help. Shalom Azure |

2 | Why related it to the feeding of 5000 | Mark 6:52 | DocTrinsograce | 220364
Dear Sister Azure, The feeding of the five thousand formed the basis of explicit instruction to the disciples of the apostolic foundation of the church -- the kirigma. Prior to the miracle, Jesus asks the disciples how would they might feed the people (John 6:5). We are told that our Lord asked that question explicitly to manifest the thinking (prove/test/assay) the thinking of the disciples (v6). That is a wonderful teaching technique. I have a clear memory of teachers asking me questions, prior to a demonstration. The erroneous nature of my answer was made perfectly obvious by the demonstration. Those lessons I learned very well, and that have stayed with me. Jesus is using that very method -- for our God is the greatest pedagogue of them all! Notice, in particular, how the resources of the disciples compare to the resources of the Lord. I think we often face life, measuring its challenges by the inadequacy of our own resources. But when those same challenges are measured from the standpoint of the Lord's resources, how different they appear! So, what is the point of this miracle? I would say it this way: Christ Himself is the source, resource, and full provision of the church. Where He is, nothing is lacking. All of our needs, and all that the church does arises out of the Christ Himself. He is a King that provides for their needs to the end of glorifying God (John 6:32-33)... never to the ends of satisfying their lusts (John 6:26-27). According to God's eternal purpose, the day would soon come when the apostles would be feeding the sheep... sheep that would hunger and thirst after righteousness. The resources of man are wholly inadequate to the task. The apostles would need to regularly feed people the flesh and blood of Christ (John 6:35-40). No, a lot of times the disciples did not understand what Christ meant until later on. Their understanding would grow over the years. Several sermons would be necessary to adequately exposit John 6. I have condensed these thoughts into a simple post. I hope that it helps. In Him, Doc |

3 | Why related it to the feeding of 5000 | Mark 6:52 | azurelaw | 220380
Dear Brother Doc, Thank you very much. The additional insight is very helpful :-) I have also observed the contrast of Mark's portraying the incidents about the reaction of Jesus'(v34) and the disciples' attitude (v36) toward the crowd. It looks like though they had obtained the power of healing, doing miracles and preaching the gospel (v7-13), they have little (or no) compassion/love to the people. As you have rightly said that they would be feeding the sheep and forming the church. And I believe this was Jesus' fore-shadowing their future role in this discipleship incident. Yet, they failed to understand and they did not have the shepherd heart, too. Shalom Azure |
