"and on their heart I will write it" NASB Jeremiah 31:33 "But this is the covenant which I will make with the house of Israel after those days," declares the LORD, "I will put My law within them and on their heart I will write it; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. "It takes unacceptable theological legerdemain to conclude that when God writes the Torah (law) on hearts he changes it into something other than the Torah" (Restoring the Jewishness of the Gospel, David H. Stern, Jewish New Testament Publications, Inc., 1988)! matt517 |

Defining "legalism" Legalism is requiring people to obey a perverted version of the Torah (Law) in which God's Law is seen as a set of rules unrelated to faith. "For sin will not have authority over you; because you are not under legalism but under grace." Romans 6:14 (Complete Jewish Bible, David H. Stern, Jewish New Testament Publications, Inc., 1998) "Legalism is not strict adherence to the laws of God. It is the imposition of traditions of men as if they were laws of God" (Tim Sheasby). Legalism does not mean keeping the Law of Moses. Legalism is keeping man-made religious rules and regulations, adding to the law." "Legalism is keeping man-made rules and regulations in order to earn salvation. The Ten Commandments are God-given enduring principles of right and wrong. But simply keeping those requirements does not by itself guarantee salvation, as the rich young ruler who claimed to have kept all the law found out (Luke 18:18-27). How much less will the keeping of dress codes and entertainment guidelines fall short of earning our salvation. Yet it is easy to fall into the trap of thinking that what we do or avoid doing will earn for us a place in God's kingdom" (The Assemblies of God Perspectives: General Christian Doctrines, pp. 25-26, Assemblies of God Office of Public Relations)" matt517 |
