1 | May we claim rewards for tithing? | Mal 3:10 | kenpo | 2463
The following two verses sound too good to be true. But, I know God always keeps His word. The church has claimed these verses if we are willing to be faithful in our tithes and offerings. It will mean great sacrifice but the returns sound worth it. How literally may I take these verses??? The verses are: Malachi 3:10 and Luke 6:38 Thanks |

If God said it then we should take Him at his word. He has never failed yet. This is the only thing that God has asked they we test Him on, "and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it". |

Upon closer examination of Malachi 3:10 on testing GOd with our tithes we should understand that tithes was also a vow Jacob made to God in his journey before meeting with Esau. This vow applies to all descendants of Jacob, which Christians are not. Christians are followers and descendants through faith in Christ who is in the order of Melchizadek. We are not bound by Jacobs vow. Whatever we give should be out of faith. I am possitive that the Spirit of God would work more powerfully through his believers if we would give according to the needs we see around us rather than the local buildng fund of our church. When there are special needs like sending off teams to foreign lands than we should be willing to give generously but not to fund lighting and A/C or even salaries. I have seen many ministers who preach according to what the "stockholders" in the church say. If the ministers are not paid by the church except for basic needs then they are not beholden to the big givers opinions.

Dear rgarden1, We don't claim things we read in the Bible we receive things we read in the Bible, Malachi was speaking of receiving a promise of God by obedience to His word, not claiming rewards. The Holy Spirit is not waiting around for people to act before He will though, He is already working through people. The question is what is He trying to do? Evangelize always, guide us always. I think the issue of giving to the needs we see around us is important though, but what is the primary role of the church? I will not answer that I will leave room for you to do that... The New Testament teaches grace giving you are on track... II Corinthians 9:7 Each must do as he has purposed in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. However, no one according to this text should be compelled to give for any reason, it has to be from their heart. The Holy Spirit has to do a work in people's hearts before they will open up and give though, just letting people know others need something more than they do won't get people to open up their hearts to give to these needs. Not every church and not every members is called to be a missionary or a missionary church either. Not all pastors except money either, and not all pastors let their boards run them into the ground, or the "stockholders" either. Not all pastors have a second job in a big church and you should not muzzle the ox while he works... It is interesting what you say about reaching out to address needs though, that is a first century church model for sure, see Acts 2 and 4 at the ends. Most folks would not be willing to part with things in order to follow that model, but it is the model... That has always bothered me... That we no longer operate like that, everyone is out for his own interests to make a living and don't think much or often about using what God gave us to do what Jesus said; hungry you fed Me, naked you clothed Me, homeless you housed Me. Ain't nobody gonna take a homeless person off the street are they? They might give em a few bucks, but not a track of land to sell to go get an apartment... Even Christians are not running around doing this for Christians these days. God's Day To You, Tamara |

Greetings Tam! The issue of ministering to the needs of others is a question to which I have given much thought and prayer. Our congregation is called 'Beacon Church of the Nazarene', so we are listed very early in the phone book. Therefore, we receive many requests for financial help. Our congregation is very willing to give to others, but we also have limited resources. We have discovered, however, that giving money to someone is not always helping them. You used the example of giving a piece of land to a homeless person. If that homeless person is also a drug addict, giving him a piece of land could end up killing him. :-( Further, there are a lot of scam artists out there. So, we try to be good stewards of the resources God has given us. We do several things on a regular basis. 1) We have a very active food pantry. We will give food to anyone who asks. During the holidays, we put together food baskets that we also will give to anyone who asks. Sometimes, we even give to those who don't ask, if we know of a need. 2) We collect clothing, small appliances, furniture, and anything else we can collect, and then give them away several times a year. We get all kinds of funny looks when people stop and ask how much we want for that couch, and we tell them that it is free. :-) 3) We help with gas when we are able, but we are trying to establish a fund to purchase gas cards so that we don't have to hand out cash. 4) We also give more than 10 percent of our 'income' to missions. I thank God everyday for our congregation. They are a real blessing to serve. We had a family recently who gave another family two funeral plots that a wife might bury husband and be buried next him herself. We have one family who brings many people to church with them. However, their van was too small. So, they went out and bought a 15 passenger van for their private vehicle so that they could bring more people with them. Do keep churches in prayer though. With the price of gas and groceries, this winter could be rough in terms of both the people in the church and those without. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

Pastor Tim, it is good to hear of the good things your church is doing to meet needs. Just out of curiousity what does your church do for widows and orphans or is that something that is left up to individual church members? I know we are suppose to care for widows and orphans of our own family. Blessings, Val

Greetings Val! At the present time, this hasn't been an issue in our congregation. If the need arises, I am sure that the people would respond. :-) Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
