1 | Another Counselor? | Is 9:6 | Morant61 | 113159
Greetings Punkiedo! I asked a question of someone the other day who shared your theological background, but he/she did not respond. May I ask you the same question? In John 14:16, Jesus says, "And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever—" Now, the word 'another' is the English translation of the Greek word 'allos'. The Enhanced Strongs says that this word indicates 'numerical distinction' or 'one besides'. Based upon the Oneness view, how can the Holy Spirit be 'another' Counselor? Yet, God's Word specifically says that this 'other' Counselor would be 'numerically distinct' from the Father. If I gave you a Snickers (my favorite) candy bar and then said that I would give you another one, would I being giving you another one if I simply took back the Snickers, called it a Mars Bar and gave it back to you? 'Another' indicates an actual numerical distinction. So, in your understanding, how do you explain that the Holy Spirit is 'another' Counselor? Thanks for your patience my friend! Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

You know Tim to be honest with you when you said that I was like, woah wait a minute I have read that before. I was going to call in reinforcements (ask my pastor, who is also my dad) but then I was quickened in the spirit to read this scripture. So I will answer you with this. And just so you know I prefer KJV, not saying one is better than the other, it is just my personal preference. John 14 14 If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it. 15 If ye love me, keep my commandments. 16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; 17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. 18 I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you. 19 Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also. 20 At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you. 21 He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him. Ok in the same breath that Jesus said that he says in verse 18 I WILL NOT LEAVE YOU COMFORTLESS I WILL COME TO YOU. So Jesus is going to come as the comforter? But he just said he was going to send another? In the same breath my dear friend he says, "At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you." So the comforter will be in you and Jesus says he will be in you. Interesting, just proves that they are 1. There is no triunity. And interestingly enough it says in verse 17 that "but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you." How could that be? He is sending someone else right? But he dwells with them abd SHALL BE IN THEM???? Because Jesus is the Holy Ghost. |

Greetings Punkiedo! My wife is a PK too! :-) Thanks for the response my friend! May I be blunt though, and hopefully not rude? Your answer doesn't deal with the meaning of the word 'another' at all. The word means 'someone other than the subject'. It always refers to someone numerically distinct from the subject. Jesus cannot be the 'other' Counselor. To go back to my candy bar analogy, if I simply give you the Snicker's back again, it (by definition) cannot be 'another' candy bar. It is the 'same' candy bar. In the same way, Greek as a word for 'same'. If Jesus were simply saying that He was coming back, He would not have used the word 'other'. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

There was a time when I HATED being a "PK" I felt like I had to be perfect. If she ever needs someone to talk to tell her to contact me. I understand the struggles. I have soft spot in my heart for PK's. We have a bad name amongst a lot of people. And no you didn't come across as rude or anything. To be honest with you, I looked up the word in strongs and you are right it does say allos and it means another, other, or one. But it also says to reference another word. Interestingly enough the word it tells me to reference is Alpha. Which is the first letter of the greek alphabet and used to discribe Christ. So, in essence Jesus is the comforter. You have to read that whole verse to see what Jesus is saying.

Greetings Punkideo! She is pretty use to it by now! :-) She has also been a pastor's wife for about 12 years, just my wife for 20 now! :-) May I ask where you found a reference to 'alpha' in Strong's? I looked in my hard copy, my software, and online, and I could find no reference to 'alpha' in the definiton of 'allos'. I would not expect to find it either since the words are not related at all. Now, back to my original question though, how can Jesus be 'other or another' than who He is? What the doctrine of the Trinity attempts to do is make sense of all the data in Scripture. For instance, we agree that there is only one God. Those who believe in the Trinity do not believe in three Gods. But, at the same time, Scripture makes distinctions between the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Jesus prays to the Father. Jesus ascends back to the Father, and sends the Holy Spirit. The Trinity doctrine is the only one (in my view) that makes sense of all the data. Only one God, but three distinct and different Persons within that Godhead. John 14:16 is an important one for the Oneness doctrine to come to grips with as it simply can't be explained away, unless one is willing to say that Jesus used the wrong word! :-) Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

I am DEFINITLY praying for y'all. My dad was a home missions pastor. Being a pastor's wife is definitely not easy. I know there are times when my mother would rather be something else. Her and my dad have been married for 25 years on mother's day. And have been pastoring for 14. Well, Pastor Tim, it is ok if I call you that right? I just feel like special respect is due for ministry. The rest of the chapter tells what Jesus was saying when he said this. Yes he said another, but he also claimed to be that one. In the same chapter in the same breath. He claimed to be the comforter. He was telling them that he would no longer be With them humanly but he would be IN them spiritually. Great is the mystery of Godliness. God can do more that we even think possible. Hey BTW put my little bro on your prayer list. I have been like telling everyone. He had (I say had because we believe he is healed) brain cancer he is 11 years old. He was suppose to have died on October 16, 2003, but God has other plans for him. Just ask your congregation to pray for a COMPLETE recovery. |
