1 | ex.-29/20symbol blood on rightside only? | Ex 29:20 | Makarios | 36798 | ||
Greetings angel1! Here is a little commentary on Exodus 29:20.. "29:19,20 Daubing blood on the right ear, hand, and big toe symbolically sanctified the ear to hear the Word of God, the hand to do the work of God, and the foot to walk in the way of God." (1) "29:20 right ear. Symbolizing sensitivity to God and His word. right hands ... right feet. Symbolizing a life of service to others on God's behalf." Greetings Angel1! Excellent question! If we look at this 'blood symbol' in a little more depth, we find the very same scenario in Leviticus 8:23,24; 14:14-17.. Since God is explicitly directing the anointing of the priests by specifing both the right and left hands (Lev. 14:14-17), then we can see why a priest would be so careful to be anointed in this way: because God commanded it to be that way. However, why only the right side? What if a priest was left-handed? God did not deem it necessary for an entire priest's body to be anointed in blood, and He did not need to use every extremity of the human body to carry out this effective method of reminding the priests of their duty and relationship to God and the people. So God only chose the 'right' side (using a part to represent the whole) to illustrate that a priest should be consecrated to the Lord's service with their entire body. "The Right Hand" has always been an 'exalted' position, i.e., to be at the 'right hand' of someone's side as a helper or primary support. The 'right hand' has always been defined as THE 'place of honor' at one's side. For more about the significance of stating 'the right hand', please see Hebrews 1:13, 10:12, Psalm 110:1, Matthew 22:44, Mark 12:36, Luke 20:43 and Acts 2:35. In these passages, the sovereignty of Christ extends over all creation, since Christ is at God's "right hand"! This 'right hand' significance or 'place of honor' can be seen in today's society by observing a simple handshake between two gentlemen. You never see a person shake another person's left hand; it is always the right hand that is being used in handshakes and to express greetings. And by shaking a person's hand, we show honor and acknowledgement to another person. And in this way, the significance of the anointing of the 'right-hand' extremites of a priest extends or 'speaks for' his entire body as a whole, and it carries a much greater significance than that which could be carried out with his 'left' hand. The 'left hand' significance does not carry as much esteem or honor as that of the 'right hand', but it still remains a significant place nonetheless (Matthew 20:21-22). In this way, we can see more of the significance of a priest's right extremities being anointed as opposed to his left extremities. Blessings to you, Makarios |

Greetings Angel1! I'm not sure how much deeper you can go than to have God commanding and directing the anointing of His priests in a certain way, or to realize that God used the illustration of His "right hand" when He described the very place that His Son now holds, which is at His side and most honored position. But if you believe that the anointing of a priest's right hand has a somehow 'deeper' meaning or origin than this, then by all means, may the Lord bless you in your studies! Your Brother in Christ, Makarios |
