1 | Verdict on the ESV: An opinion poll.. | Ps 119:105 | EdB | 31766
ESV I just received my copy and so far I’m enjoying it. I had passed this information on to others via e-mail but I think it is worthy to repeat here. Moody Radio Openline Tuesday 22 had Dr. J. I . Packer the chair for the ESV translation committee. Dr Packer said the ESV was based on the work of the RSV to some extent. Apparently there were many that didn’t like the NRSV as a update to the RSV. They approached the copyright holder and asked for permission to do their own translation. The team was then assembled and work began. The process took 3 years and used all the latest material (manuscripts and texts) available. Their purpose was to generate a literal translation what was worded in such a way to flow both in silent reading and reading aloud. They also wanted a translation that had a kind of poetical flow that would lend itself to memorization much like the KJV does Dr. Packer said he always recommended a person should use 4 translations NASB for a very literal word for word translation. KJV to catch the poetical flow NIV or NLT for a paraphrase in common language RSV for a neutral presentation of the scripture. He said he has since changed. He now feels the ESV takes the place of the NASB for literalness and RSV for neutral presentation. With the KJV still used for the Poetical aspect And NIV or NLT for a paraphrase. He talked about the genre issue and apparently the translation team resisted the temptation of being PC and rendered the ESV as close to the Greek and Hebrew as possible. His final words were use the translation that your comfortable with and can memorize. He felt ESV could and would fit that bill. His comments sold me and I went out and purchased a copy as I said above and I'm now in the process of reading it. EdB |

2 | Verdict on the ESV: An opinion poll.. | Ps 119:105 | Makarios | 31878
Greetings, EdB! Excellent post, and I agree! The ESV is an excellent new translation, and it is here to stay! I read that excerpt that you sent through e-mail, and I appreciate you re-posting it here so that we can have others respond to it. However, I am still "grounded" in the NASB, even though the ESV has become my second most used Bible in a relatively short amount of time! Blessings to you, Makarios |
