1 | How old is the earth? | Gen 1:1 | llaws | 158544
Genesis 2:4 speaks of the period of creation of the heavens and earth as ONE day. "These428 are the generations8435 of the heavens8064 and of the earth776 when they were created,1254 in the day3117 that the LORD3068 God430 made6213 the earth776 and the heavens,8064" Logically, we consider what the Bible itself tells us first and then if science agrees then I consider the understanding of the scripture as definitely accurate. Science agrees with the Bible's use of "a day" being a period of thousands of years. Science says that the light of distant stars show them to be millions of years old. The Bible says in both Ps. 90:4 and 2 Pet. 3:8 that "a day" is to God a thousand years. Along with all that you showed BradK the Bible uses "day" for more that just a 24-hour period. I will ask you; what verse in Genesis chapter 1 tells us when God created light? |

How could there be light on the first day of Creation if the sun was not created until the fourth day? 'Genesis 1:3-5 declares, "And God said, 'Let there be light,' and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and He separated the light from the darkness. God called the light 'day,' and the darkness He called 'night.' And there was evening, and there was morning — the first day." A few verses later we are informed, "And God said, 'Let there be lights in the expanse of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark seasons and days and years, and let them be lights in the expanse of the sky to give light on the earth.' And it was so. God made two great lights — the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars. God set them in the expanse of the sky to give light on the earth, to govern the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness. And God saw that it was good. And there was evening, and there was morning — the fourth day" (Genesis 1:14-19). How can this be? How could there be light, mornings and evenings on the first, second, and third days if the sun, moon, and stars were not created until the fourth day? 'This is only a problem if we fail to take into account an infinite and omnipotent God. God does not need the sun, moon, and stars to provide light. God is light! 1 John 1:5 declares, "This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in Him there is no darkness at all." God Himself was the light for the first three days of Creation, just as He will be in the new heavens and new earth, “There will be no more night. They will not need the light of a lamp or the light of the sun, for the Lord God will give them light. And they will reign for ever and ever” (Revelation 22:5). Until He created the sun, moon, and stars, God miraculously provided light during the “day” and did not do so during the “night” (Genesis 1:14).' ____________________ www.gotquestions.org/light-first-sun-fourth.html |

Hi The verses do not say nor imply that God "created the sun on day one nor on day four. Before those seven day periods began the verse verse says that God created the heavens (sun). Then the 7 cration day periods began. :-) |

llaws: Much of this "higher criticism" of Genesis' creation account flows from the poison pens of liberal exegetes in their inane and misguided efforts to pander to the disciples of secular humanism and Darwin's godless theory of evolution. I believe the web site www.icr.org has alread been cited on this thread, by Kalos, unless I'm much mistaken. I urge you to go there and spend some time on this site. It is the product of some keen Christian thinkers, scientists all, who devote their lives to researching scientific fact, pseudo-scientific theory, and biblical truth. The syntheses they put together based on their research and findings make for interesting and thought-provoking reading. ..... I've had the pleasure of meeting and conversing with the president of Institute for Creation Research (ICR), Dr. John Morris, and own a copy of the "Defender's Study Bible" annotated by his father, Dr. Henry Morris, president-emeritus and founder of ICR. I have been impressed by the quick minds of these two men as well as by their deep committment to the Christian faith. Additionally, I've read widely from the works of a number of other people on the staff of ICR and find their works rock solid and theologically orthodox. ...... I recommend without reservation that you delve into the materials available on line at this web site and, if you choose, to obtain also such books as the Institute publishes that may be of particular interest to you. Dr. Henry Morris, who is now approaching 90, has written a book a year for the last half century or so. ..... I've read your posts and truly believe that this icr.org web site may well be especially interesting and instructive to you. There are articles on yom, the Hebrew word for day, that likely will appeal to you. ..... The remarkable thing about true science is that the more advanced it becomes, the more nearly it comfirms what God said in the first place! I'm quite content to take what God said and stand by quietly while science struggles to catch up. I suppose that's one way of saying that I base my faith on God's truth and not on man's theory. --Hank
