461 | Do we display consistency to the world? | Matt 11:7 | prayon | 60105
Hank said it perfectly - surely my brother you jest! If this far fetched situation did happen however I would suggest that Tom and Jerry stop acting like cats on the hunt and instead be as quiet as mice until they read and absorb Matthew 6:3-5.....prayon
462 | What is Christ's rest? | Matt 11:28 | prayon | 13034
People were heavy-laden and weary from carrying around their burdons of sin, excessive demands of religious leaders (Acts 23:4), oppression and persecution, and plain worry. A yoke is a heavy wooden harness that fits over the shoulders of an ox or oxen. In Jesus day a man would by an ox and take it to a carpenter who measured its shoulders and made a yoke to fit. Jesus was probably thinking back to his days as a carpenter when he used this anology. If a yoke wasn't fitted properly an ox was sure to of suffered badly, but Jesus always made the yoke to fit perfectly. Oxen were sometimes yoked together to pull the load or do the work. Christ made our yoke to fit together with Him perfectly so that He can help us with our load and give us rest. His yoke will fit us easily. When we become Christians we are immediately yoked together with Him. When we are yoked together with Him he shares our load with us and if we run out of strength he can let Him pull the entire load. We no longer have to bear our burdens alone. Therefore when we are yoked together with Him we have the ability to rest and let Him carry our many burdens. We will come short of entering God's rest when we keep some of our burdens instead of giving them to Him entirely. If we carry any of our own load of burdens we can not have rest. According to the Old Testament the Sabbath was a day of rest (Exo. 20:8-11). You were not to do any work whatsoever on a Sunday. You were even forbidden to carry more than a pound (which means you could take a pen to church but you couldn't take your bbible :o)..) In Heb 4:9-11 we are told again to give our burdens to Christ and rest, but it our choice whether we enter into that rest. |

463 | having to work the sabbath | Matt 12:1 | prayon | 33808
Greetings Brac, Being a nurse, I too, have to occationally work on Sunday. I want to refer you to the reply I made to Dino concerning what he said in reply to your question. Also, whoever needs to work on the Sabbath should set aside one day of their choosing and make it a day dedicated to God. Exo 20:9-11 tells us that we are to work 6 days but the 7th day is a Sabbath (the observance of a day or time of rest: Funk and Wagnalls Dictionary). Any day can be our Sabbath it does not have to be on Sunday. prayon
464 | Disbelief after witnessing a miracle? | Matt 12:13 | prayon | 48317
Greetings chynna, Good question! First you must remember that the Pharisee' were only religious on the outside. The only thing that they were concerned about was their own agenda. When they saw Christ heal the man's hand they immediately saw him as a threat to their way of life and religious leadership. They knew that they would loose their status in the community. Isn' it interesting that men who saw healing as being a sin on the Sabbath saw no sin in plotting a murder on the Sabbath? prayon |

465 | Is Beelzebul or Baalzebub Satan? | Matt 12:27 | prayon | 5616
Beelzebub was a god worshipped by the Ekronites. The original form and meaning is unclear. Originally it may of meant "lord of the lofty abode" and then because this god was considered by the Hebrews to be a unworthy rival to Yawweh, it may of been revised to "lord of the flies" (Baalzebub). Later it was altered even further to Beelzebul which means "lord of the dung". In the intertestamental period numerous names were used to designate the leaders of the forces of evil one of the names selected was Beel-zebul. In the New Testament Beelzebul is believed to be the chief of the demons (Satan). Beelzebul is also a name that the scribes derisively applied to Jesus upon His healing of a demon-possessed person. Jesus made clear that His actions were intended for the kingdom of God and were performed in opposition to the kingdom of Satan, (Matt. 12:24-27; Mark 3:22-26; Luke 11:15-19. This may be where the name Beelzebul became associated with Satan as it was never identified in the Old Testament with the devil or Satan. (Harpers Bible Dictionary and Eerdmans Bible Dictionary.) |

466 | Where was Jesus during death? | Matt 12:40 | prayon | 175151
Greetins 6Bunkins and welcome to the forum! The bible is not specific about what Jesus was doing during those 3 days and nights. We do know that He went to paradise (Luk 23:43 Jesus said to him, "I can guarantee this truth: Today you will be with me in paradise."). In Rev 1:18 Jesus says "I was dead, but now I am alive forever. I have the keys of death and hell." It is assumed that He got these "keys" during those 3days and nights. The bible also states in Mat 12:40 that "Like Jonah, three days and nights in the fish's belly, the Son of Man will be gone three days and nights in a deep grave". Hope this helps some, prayon |

467 | What does unclean sprit look for to rest | Matt 12:43 | prayon | 29346
I believe that it will look for another body to reside in. Unclean spirits are looking to cause problems or prohibit growth in Christ. Although they can live in animals as Jesus showed us when He sent the demons into the swine in Mark 5:11-13, they can not do much to further the cause of Satan while in animals. prayon
468 | matt 13:1-9 means | Matt 13:8 | prayon | 137911
Greetings and welcome to the forum. In this parable Jesus is teaching us the importance of having a receptivity of the heart. The sower is anyone who teaches or preaches about Jesus. This includes even the newest Christian telling someone else about Christ. The seed is the word or the gospel. There are 4 different types of soil. The first is the wayside soil. This represents the person with a closed heart. The birds that peck the seeds out of the soil are the cares of the world. The stony soil is when the word is heard but it does not take route. The person does not count the cost of walking with Christ. The soil with the thorns is the most deceptive of all. The seed takes root but it bears no fruit. It is choked out by the cares of the world. It represents the preoccupied person. Their devotion is minimized by distractions, there just doesn't seem to be enough time to pray or read the bible. The weeds roots of pleasures and cares have cholked out the true seed before it can develop and and produce fruit. The last soil is the good soil. This is the person who hears the word and bears fruit. Some thirty fold (the wone that is saved but only half-heartedly), some sixty-fold (bearing fruit but without complete obedience) and one hundred fold (complete obedience to God). Hope this helps, prayon |

469 | How is kingdom of heaven like leaven? | Matt 13:33 | prayon | 6164
The flour (milled grains) is said to represent the kingdom of God comprised of single grains of wheat united in one body. In the bible, yeast is usually spoken of symbolically to mean evil as in Matt 16:11. Paul tells us to get rid of the old yeast from our lives because a little yeast can work through a whole batch of dough (Gal 5:9). Therefore it is believed that Jesus was warning the disciples the possibility of false doctrine, the yeast, being inserted into the body of Christ and affecting the whole body (Acts 20:29-30).
470 | Are we like the Pharisees? | Matt 16:1 | prayon | 4436
I think we are more like the Saducees today than the Pharisees. The Pharisees were very focused in their beliefs. They followed the traditions of the elders, believed in God's promises, and were looking for the Messiah. The Sadusees, on the other hand, didn't believe in the promises, didn't care about the bible, worked with the Roman government and were not looking for the Messiah. I think this describes the people of today more. So many people today could care less about religion but only about themselves. As with the Pharisees and the Sadusees a miracle could be done right in front of them and they wouldn't believe it. Jesus was at odds with them so much because they were being religious on the outside for and it was only for show because on the inside were full of nothing but self. They were wicked and they rejected the truth. I believe that He would of felt the same today as He did then. |

472 | Still not convinced | Matt 16:6 | prayon | 91349
Greetings 4givn, You are correct in saying that it has to do with spiritual healing, the Hebrew word for transgressions is Pesha. Pesha means a revolt (national, moral or religious): - rebellion, sin, transgression, trespassive(6588). It is also described as to break away (from just authority), that is, trespass, apostatize, quarrel: - offend, rebel, revolt, transgress (6586) Essentially it is a breach of relationship; Man / Sin relationship breached spiritually - Make Him Lord and breach restored. In the first line of this passage we see the word griefs. Griefs in Hebrew is kholily which means malady, anxiety, calamity: - disease, grief, (is) sick (-ness)(2483). This is talking about the physical body. Again in the next verse it addresses spiritual healing. The word iniquities (avon in Hebrew) means perversity, that is, (moral) evil: - fault, iniquity, mischief, punishment (of iniquity), sin (5771) or properly a part of; hence (prepositionally), from or out of in many senses: - above, after, among, at, because of, by (reason of), from (among), in, X neither, X nor, (out) of, over, since, X then, through, X whether, with (4480). The last line also talks of physical healing. The word healed (by His stripes we are healed) in Hebrew is rapha which means A primitive root; properly to mend (by stitching), that is, (figuratively) to cure: - cure, (cause to) heal, physician, repair, X thoroughly, make whole (7495). Jesus had 39 lashes and there are 39 different categories of diseases today, Interesting isn't it. The middle 2 lines of each verse (carried our sorrows and chastised for our peace both have to do with the mind or soul. Sorrows or makob, means anguish or (figuratively) affliction: - grief, pain, sorrow, eomtional pain and suffering. (4341). And peace or shalom of course means peace, prosperity, wellness, safeness, completeness, or wholeness (7965). Once we are reconciled with God we have peace and wholeness. Hope this gives you a better understanding. prayon |

473 | Yeast of Pharisees and Sadducees? | Matt 16:11 | prayon | 6163
The yeast is the false teachings of the Pharisees and the Sadducees that concentrated on the outward appearance but ignored the inner life. The stressed tradition ablve God's word as well as hypocracy and unbelief. Jesus was warning the disciples that their own spiritual life could be affected by the corrupting yeast all around them. It helps to better understand it if you think of baking a loaf of bread and how the yeast gets worked through the bread until none of the dough is left untouched.
474 | who did jesus disciples claim he was? | Matt 16:13 | prayon | 144804
Greetings and welcome to the forum! when Jesus asked the disciple who they thought He was they answered "Some say you are John the Baptizer, others Elijah, still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets." (v 14) But Peter answered "You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God!" (v 16). prayon |

475 | was it christ risen or the denial | Matt 16:16 | prayon | 52960
Greetings sistergirl, Peters confession was a confession of faith. Messiah (or Christ in some translations) means "Annointed One". By this confession, Peter stated that Jesus was uniquely annointed by the Holy Spirit to be God's King, Prophet, and Priest over humnanity. Peter recognized and publicly acknowledged that Jesus was the one that was promised to come throughout the OT. Only the Holy Spirit could so enlighted a person with such a divine knowledge. The living God was a OT name for Jehovah. prayon
476 | matthaew 16 verse 24 | Matt 16:24 | prayon | 29131
Greetings! To add just a little more to the above answers. The cross is at the place where your will differs from God's. To take up your cross means to deny your self. To do this you must count your desires, thoughts, feelings, plans - your entire former way of life and thinking as having died. In its place you are to chooses God's thoughts, God's will, God's emotions, God's purposes, and God's power at the very center of your being and life. prayon
477 | Did Jesus' disciples know who He was? | Matt 17:2 | prayon | 3938
The disciples learned who He was at different times. For some it was a gradual process from witnessing His miracles and healings. Peter, James and John had a special revelation of Jesus divinity when He was transfigured before them on the mountain in Matthew 17: 1-8. In Matthew 17:9, however, Jesus instructs the disciples accompanying Him not to discuss the transformation with anyone, including the other disciples, until after Jesus was raised from the dead because neither the disciples nor outsiders would understand the meaning until after His resurrection. Judas did not realize who He truly was until the end when he returned the pieces of silver Matthew 27:3. In Matthew 16:13-20 Peter first publically acknowledges Jesus as the Messiah, the son of the living God. I don't believe some of them knew until Jesus was raised from the dead and appeared to them. Thomas did not believe that the Jesus had truly risen until he touched Him, John 20:24-29 Many were startled and terrified when He appeared to the disciples in Luke 24:36. If they truly had no doubt that He was the Messiah why were they startled to see Him, shouldn't they of been expecting Him? Mark states in 16:14 that Jesus upbraided or rebuked them for their lack of faith and stubborness because they had not believed those who saw Him after He had risen. If they truly believed they should of been expecting Him. |

478 | Tranfiguration: What and Why? | Matt 17:2 | prayon | 6448
Hank, the transformation is both a startling and powerful event in the life of Christ. It has significance in the story of God's redemption of humanity and it reveals to the disciples something of the divine glory that Jesus enjoyed with His Father from the beginning of time. The transformation took place at night, on a high mountain (Matt 17:1) when our Lord was praying (luke 9:28). The mountain was probably Mount Herman near Caesarea Philippi which was about 9,400 feet in height. After Peter's confession Jesus took a time out from His ministry to pour out His needs to the Father for wisdom, confirmation, guidance and strength. He knew that the Cross was fast approaching. Undoubtedly He also prayed for His disciples that they would understand what was to come. There were many things accomplished by the Transformation. 1) Christ's glory was revealed to the disciples. Isaiah said in 53:2 that "he had no form or majesty that we should look at Him, nothing in His appearance that we should desire Him." No external marks of any type distinguished Jesus as being the Messiah. It was when the disciples saw Jesus transformed that they had their confirmation that Jesus truly was the Son of God. 2) The transformation was also a confirmation to Jesus that He was on the right road and had His Father's full approval. 3) The transformation also allowed Jesus to get the strength to He would need to get through the days ahead. It is believed He did this through the fellowship with Moses and Elijah. **It is interesting to note that it was suggested that Jesus could of returned to heaven at that time, for He was without sin and death had no power over Him. 4) God revealed Himself through His "Shekinah" glory and commanded the disiples to hear and obey His Son. prayon |

479 | Did my dad go to heaven or hell? | Matt 18:3 | prayon | 165414
Greetings Tyrone, I can only tell you what the bible says in Mat 18:3: "Then he said to them, "I can guarantee this truth: Unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven." I am in the same situation with my best friend who was killed. What I do know is that we do not know what happened in the final minutes or seconds of their life. You can be 1 minute from death and receive Jesus and still enter into the gates of heaven. And you do not have to do it verbally - only in your heart. You do not know what happened in the last minutes or seconds your father had on earth or where his heart led him. Our prayers can not change where a dead loved one will spend eternity so I am not sure why you felt led to pray for your father - but maybe God wants you to use his death to bring others to Christ. prayon |

480 | Literal or Not? | Matt 19:4 | prayon | 92933
Greetings journey, You asked how do we distinguish metaphors, parables, and symbols. May I recommend a book by R.C. Sproul "Knowing Scripture". It goes through all the principles of bible interpretation. Throughout the bible all symbols have the same meaning. When applying the principles it helps to give you a much deeper and easier understanding. prayon |
