NASB | 1 Samuel 6:19 ¶ He struck down some of the men of Beth-shemesh because they had looked into the ark of the LORD. He struck down of all the people, 50,070 men, and the people mourned because the LORD had struck the people with a great slaughter. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | 1 Samuel 6:19 ¶ The LORD struck down some of the men of Beth-shemesh because they had looked into the ark of the LORD. He struck down 50,070 men among the people, and the people mourned because the LORD had struck the people with a great slaughter. |
Bible Question: I am wondering if the answer might be 70 of which 50 were thousandmen (chief men) as is indicated in Young's translation and Green's "Modern King James"? Could it be that Green's "Literal" translation could be understood as meaning five percent when it says "50 out of a thousand men" so that 70 out of 1400 men were smitten? |
Bible Answer: Hello Bill This same line of thinking has been put forth to account for the census numbers of the children of Israel. Except there it is viewed as family groups rather then chiefs of thousandmen. You can see the paper at http://www.noble-minded.org/exodus.html Steve |
