NASB | Ruth 4:7 ¶ Now this was the custom in former times in Israel concerning the redemption and the exchange of land to confirm any matter: a man removed his sandal and gave it to another; and this was the manner of attestation in Israel. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | Ruth 4:7 ¶ Now formerly in Israel this was the custom concerning redeeming and exchanging property. To confirm a transaction, a man pulled off his sandal and gave it to the other. This was the way of confirming and attesting in Israel. |
Bible Question: I understand that the Jewish custom provides that one who wore sandels or shoes was a person of standing in the social status. That servants and slaves did not have sandels. Is this correct and how does this apply to Ruth 4? |
Bible Answer: Greetings Jirehway! I'm not sure if there was a hard and fast division between those who had shoes and those who didn't (master or slave). However, there certainly was a custom in the OT that transactions were completed by removing one's shoe in the presence of the town elders. Ruth 4:7 refers to this custom as does Deut. 25:7-10. It seems to have been an action similar to our shaking hands or raising our hand in a oath. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
