Bible Question: Hi I was wondering what the first book of the New Testament was, some stuff Ive found is saying james others 1 thes ?? |
Bible Answer: Hi, lrae... Welcome to the forum! I see what you mean, looking on the Internet I find James and Galatians in contention for the earliest book. It probably depends on perspective. For example, it may be based on earliest manuscripts; earliest fragments; earliest references in non-biblical works; etc. Often there are additional presuppositions that might cause scholarly differences. I have seen efforts to provide a chronological arrangement of the books of the bible. However, I think that that fails to see the value of the traditional order of the books. That order is not simply arbitrary. Rather it represents very considered factors by scholars for millennia. There is such a remarkable concensus, that it isn't even debated any more. Of course, we recognize it as a human imposed order, but one cannot help but see the hand of God behind it. In Him, Doc |
