Bible Question:
Hi dear Christian friends: I have a perhaps strange question. I am seriously thinking of buying a HOLMAN Study Bible. I am a Southern Baptist. I like the notes that I have seen on line, and it uses the name of God Yahweh. But I have not known anyone who has one and how they like it. I am very solidly a student of my NASB, so the Holman would be in addition to my other Bibles. SO... if you own one tell me what you think about it, please. Thanks, as always. justme |
Bible Answer: Hi, justme... For what it is worth: About a week ago I asked some SBC pastors this very question. (How is that for serendipity?) Out of about half dozen of them, only one actually used the HCSB. They thought that the HCSB was a failed attempt by Lifeway to provide a standard version for SBC churches to use, since it would save the publisher money, paying fees to other publishers. They said that the Lifeway bible study series, however, tend to use other translations, depending on their authors. The other pastors who did not use the HCSB, were split in their preferences between the NASB and the ESV. Nevertheless, the consensus of them all was that the HCSB was pretty much like the NIV. I got the impression that the HCSB uses dynamic equivalence, similar to the approach used in the NIV. In Him, Doc |
