Bible Question: Will I develop the fear of God? What must I do to attain it? |
Bible Answer: Dear Tanka, God's attributes -- His power, might, divinity, and authority -- are clearly visible to all men (Romans 1:19-20). Obviously, though, that is never enough to stimulate men to actually fear Him. The fear of God arises only from knowing about Him as He has revealed Himself (Hebrews 1:1). All those other things are unmistakable. Everyone already knows they are accountable to Him: accountability always arises from the fundamental obligation of the created to their creator. What brings about a righteous fear of Him is to discover His holiness. We are clearly not holy; that is part of what you are concerned about, as you have stated here in the forum. We are clearly utterly dependent for our every moment of existence on this Holy God (Acts 17:28). We know that we must all stand before Him in judgment (2 Corinthians 5:10). In fact, if these truths do not stir us to fear God, what we know is not Him, but an idle. Indeed, it is when the Holy Spirit brings the truth of God to us, that people fall down before Him. Historically, you might want to look up a famous sermon that the Holy Spirit used to bring revival to an American community in the mid 1700's. It is by Jonathan Edwards, entitled "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God." You can hear it online and/or read the text of the sermon. In Him, Doc |
