Bible Question:
Hi,I would like to know how soul is translated from the oldest transcripts, referring to God in Jeremiah 5:9. God has a soul? also what is meant by Gods bowels in Jeremiah 4:19. Thanks and God Bless. |
Bible Answer: Hi, dnelson1941... Welcome to the forum! One of the attributes of God is called His simplicity. This doctrine simply asserts that God is without parts, components, additions, or an amalgamation. Rather His being is unified, singular, self-existing, unlike created things. Furthermore, you must understand that the Bible uses anthropomorphic language when speaking of God. If God did not reveal Himself in this fashion, we would be unable to comprehend even a small part of what He expects us to understand about His nature. We must take care to recognize that He is not human like (cf Job 9:32; Isaiah 55:8-9). Nevertheless, He thinks, He speaks, He sees, He plans, He acts, He moves, He loves, He hates, He wills, etc. etc. These things are not to be thought of in strictly human terms. Yet, if they were not communicated to us in human terms, we would not be able to understand. Thus, God often speaks to us about Himself in ways that we can comprehend. John Calvin said that God speaks a kind of baby talk to us, in the condescension of His self revelation. Finally, the term bowels is used idiomatically in Hebrew -- somewhat like we use the term heart or the pit of your stomach. In other words, it refers to the deepest seat of your emotions. Perhaps understanding these fundamental principles will help you to rightly interpret the passages you mentioned in Jeremiah. In Him, Doc |
