Bible Question (short): led by the Spirit or by the adversary? |
Question (full): Who should you believe, led by the Spirit or by the adversary? Why does Matthew leave out HOLY Spirit and just say "spirit" and then says, "tempted by the adversary" Mat 4:1 Then, Jesus was led up into the wilderness, by the Spirit, to be tempted by the adversary; Whereas Luke properly says, "led by the Spirit" and omits "adversary". Luk 4:1 And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was "led by the Spirit" into the wilderness," Luk 4:5 And, leading him up, he shewed him all the kingdoms of the inhabited earth, in a moment of time. Matthew says he fasted "forty days and forty nights" Mat 4:2 and, fasting forty days and forty nights,—afterwards, he hungered. Whereas Luke agrees with Mark and omits the forty nights. Luk 4:2 forty days,—being tempted by the adversary; and he did eat nothing in those days,—and, when they were concluded, he hungered. Matthew says "an exceeding high mountain" Mat 4:8 Again, the adversary taketh him with him, into an exceeding high mountain,—and pointeth out to him all the kingdoms of the world, and their glory; Luke does not see that as important and leaves out, "an exceeding high mountain" Luk 4:5 And, leading him up, he shewed him all the kingdoms of the inhabited earth, in a moment of time. Matthew adds the words, "Withdraw, Satan!" Mat 4:10 Then saith Jesus unto him, Withdraw, Satan! for it is written,—The Lord thy God, shalt thou worship, and, to him alone, render divine service. Luke does not include the words, "Withdraw, Satan!" Luk 4:12 And Jesus, answering, said to him—It is said: Thou shalt not put to the test the Lord thy God. |
