Bible Question: What is the law? |
Bible Answer: The law is the blessings and curses that are included in and a normal part of all Blood Covenants. The timing of their giving was what was unique. The Law was given to Children of Israel that had been in slavery for 400 years. As slaves the Children of Israel was forced to live in a dog eat dog world and they eventually became a mirror of that world. Now upon their freedom they were without clue how to conduct themselves morally, socially, religiously or ethically, in fact they had to relearn and in some cases reinvent the Hebrew language. So God gave the Children of Israel social, moral, ethical guidelines and a religious system by which to live, to benefit them, to bring them into covenant relationship with God and to keep them there. However like everything man touches, man began to seek ways where he could keep these guidelines but accomplish his own desires. First man instead of seeking God’s explanation of the Law began to explain the Law himself. Then man eventually added to the Law often rendering the original intent of the law meaningless. Once again man’s rebellion to God could easily be seen in the burdensome legalistic approach man took to the Law. Instead of seeing how it benefitted them and the society they lived in they began to distort its intention and used it as their legal limits. |
