Bible Question: why is water baptism important? What is baptized by the Spirit and what is being filled with the Holy Spirit |
Bible Answer: Water baptism is the first ritual that one can fulfill as a new believer in Christ. Water baptisms are wet rituals, while real baptisms are dry. The baptism of the Spirit seals the new believer. Ephes. 1:12-13 That we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ. 13In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, At the moment of salvation God in His grace does 40 things for us, 39 of them are irrevocable while one is revocable; that one is the filling of the Spirit. God says that He will never leave us or forsake us but the moment we sin He is quenched and draws back because we from that point on are functioning under the control of our old sin nature or as Scripture puts it, controlled by the flesh. We are commanded to be filled. Ephes. 5:18 And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit; This is in the imperative mood in the Koine Greek so it’s something we can do and it is accomplished by the exercise of 1 John 1:9. 1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. By naming our sins to God the Father we are put back in fellowship and under the control of the Holy Spirit again up until the next time that we get out of line by sinning! CDBJ |
