Bible Question: Is Valentine's Day Celebration also for Christians? What's its Christian affiliation? |
Bible Answer: Actually, Saint Valentine's Day was setup by the Catholic Church and remained an official church holiday until the late 1960's or early 1970's. Since the source of the original holiday and information concerning the Saint Valentine is limited, the church decided to remove the holiday, but not forbid it. Is there a reason for a Christian to celebrate this holiday? Yes. We are told in Scripture to celebrate the wife of your youth (Proverbs 5:18). In the hustle and bustle of modern life, we sometimes take for granted the ones closest to us and the spouse unfortunately can became the one most unappreciated. Taking the time to let your spouse know how much you appreciate should come more than just on Valentine's day, but at least we have one day that for us men helps give us a big reminder to say to the lady in our life how much they mean to us and how much she is appreciated.
