Bible Question (short): can 'spirit' (breath) degenerate? |
Question (full): does a 'spirit' degenerate? or just the 'soul'? my understanding is that the 'soul' (psyche) is capable of degeneration/regeneration as opposed to a 'spirit'. but that a 'spirit' is not capable of degeneration/regeneration. hence, i believe in 'soul (psyche) degeneration/regeneration' but not 'spirit (breath) degeneration/regeneration'. if their is 'spiritual degeneration', it is not actually the 'spirit' (breath)degenerating, but the 'soul' (psyche) which is degenerating due to lack of 'spirit' (breath). it is my understanding that a 'soul' (psyche) only degenerates when a person is devoid of 'spirit'. hence if 'spirit' and 'soul' (psyche) are separated from each other. but if 'spirit' (breath) and 'soul' (psyche) are enjoined together, then the 'spirit' (breath) regenerates the 'soul' (psyche). is this biblically correct? i reference the following verses: Genesis 2 7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and 'breathed' into his nostrils the 'breath' of life; and man became a living 'soul'. (KJV) Psalms 104 29 Thou hidest thy face, they are troubled: thou takest away their 'breath', they die, and return to their dust. 30 Thou sendest forth thy 'spirit', they are created: and thou renewest the face of the earth. (KJV) it seems here that God may take away the 'spirit' (breath), thereby causing death (degeneration). or give 'spirit' (breath), thereby causing life (regeneration). a 'soul' (psyche) without 'spirit' (breath) is degeneratively mortal, but a 'soul' (psyche) with 'spirit' (breath) is regeneratively immortal. is my interpretation biblically correct? |
