Bible Question (short): ? for Bible historians on translations |
Question (full): Hello, I'm doing research for a novel I'm working on, and I'm hoping some Bible historians can help me make sure that I'm using the appropriate translation for the time (based on what would have been available in the time and place the story does). In 1721, what language and version of the Bible would a devout half-English half-Spanish Catholic living in Portugal have available and quote from? (She speaks English and Castillian, but would the Bible be available in those languages at this time?) If anyone's curious about the context, it involves the character quoting the Bible using Genesis 18:23 to justify standing up to those who would destroy the innocent in the process of punishing the guilty. I apologize if this isn't the sort of query you're here to discuss, but I want to make sure I'm accurate in terms of which language and translation I should be using, and I honestly wasn't sure where else to go. If anyone could help me out with this or recommend a good source for this kind of information, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks! |
