Bible Question: Is it wrong to have a little alcohol a cople times a week? |
Bible Answer: People in the Bible drank wine. However, the danger even then was in "drinking to excess" such as Noah after the flood, and the verse in the Bible which says, "Be not drunk with wine wherein is excess." (Ephesians 5:18 That verse goes on to say "but be filled with the Spirit. Alcohol is sometimes called "spirits," but instead of relying on alcohol to make us feel good, the Bible is saying Christians should instead rely on the Holy Spirit to give us peace, comfort (make us feel good). The Holy Spirit is the "Comforter" according to the Bible. In today's world with alcohol used to excess all around us, this drink has a very bad reputation. Therefore, if you have it in your home or you drink publically, how do you know what example you are giving to other people who are not Christians. They may not know you have it only occasionally and not in excess. Christians have an obligation to God to set a good example so that others will come to Christ. Since we also have plenty of other non-alcoholic drinks to choose from for our pleasure (unlike in Bible times), it is my opinion that it is just better to stay away from alcohol altogether. That way, also we will never be tempted to use it to excess when it makes us feel good. It is also a danger and a bad example if you have children in your home. They will not understand what is "in excess" and if it is in your home, it is available to them no matter how you try to keep it safe. There are many stories of teens who learned to drink right in their own homes, and their parents were unaware. That's very sad. |
