Bible Note: Thank-you all for your replies. As I stated earlier, I was not equiped at the time for such a question. I was aware of reverend being used as an action towards God, not as a title for man. If I'm understanding my information correctly, it was first used as a title towards a woman back in 1449; sheperdness around 1598; physicians around 1612; sires around 1637; judges, clergy, and gentry around 1704. It is defined a number of ways, however; in this particular case it's defined as, "a respectful epithet applied to members of the clergy." |
