Bible Question: What are some of the radical changes in the 13th-14th-15th centery compared to the old testament that changed the way the bible was taught! Did religion get off track and if so how. Who was responsable? |
Bible Answer: steve r I can only assume your referring to the reformation. However the reformation didn't change how the Bible was taught as much as it changed how people looked at religion. Before the reformation the "church" developed doctrine, set the standards and lead the way. In some cases incorrectly and in error. After the reformation and the 'age of enlightenment' people began deciding for themselves what doctrine they needed to follow and what standards they wanted to live by. This gave rise to great diversity and is one of the reasons we have so many Protestant denominations. Also during the reformation teaching against Judaism became the very popular. This resulted in the lost of the understanding of basic Jewish cultural and religious precepts that the Bible contained. The early church had an understanding of these Jewish precepts and were able to integrate these into their religion. However many were lost to church after the reformation and these issues became mysterious stumbling blocks to those that refused to consider looking to Judaism for answers. We are just now beginning to once again understand the importance of all this and we are now beginning to bring them to life once more within the church. |
