Subject: Spiritual Maturity and Marriage |
Bible Note: Greeting, Emmaus. Perhaps a note on the light side would do no harm. Someone once observed that marriage is a fine institution, but who wants to spend the rest of his life in an institution. And I've seen marriages in which both parties to it looked more dejected than Al Capone must have looked when he was a citizen of Alcatraz. But I've been "institutionalized" for some 44 years and have never considered applying for parole. I doubt that my wife has either, but if she has, it's one of the best-kept secrets of the age. Perhaps I'm just getting old and grumpy -- although I kid myself into believing I'm getting mature and wise -- when I look around at some of these young couples these days. They shack up with no thought of assuming the commitment and responsibility of marriage, they lease a car, rent a house, rent the furniture to go in it, call it a "trial marriage" and tell the world they are settling down and establishing their roots. Often as not these "marriages" last about as long as a snow cone in the inimical sun of an Arkansas summer...... And in my many years I've had occasion to see a number of marriages wherein one party to the marriage was a Christian and the other was not. Without exception, one could tell that something was missing in all those unions. Truly it reinforces one's conviction that God not only instituted marriage and laid down certain practical instructions for its success. but that He also knows exactly what He's talking about. But then man wants to be as wise as God -- and thinks he is. Adam and Eve thought they had it all figured out back there in the Garden until their bubble burst and they found out what a mess of things they'd really made. And here we are, countless generations later, still up to the same stunts that Adam and Eve tried to pull off and failing just as miserably as they did. We delude ourselves into believing that we have better ideas on marriage -- and better ideas on everything else -- than God ever dreamed of having. As the folk song says, "When will they ever learn, when will they ever learn?" You can wake up from you nap now, Emmaus. I'm finished for now :-) Your brother in the Lord, --Hank |
