Bible Answer: Jim O, "Why is a Cross with Jesus not idolatry? Dueteronomy says any image of man, woman, or beast (paraphrasing) is an idol. I have not been able to find anything saying it's OK..." A crucifix is no more an idol than the statutes of our national leaders and heros throughout this country. It is only idolatry if people worship it rather that who and what it is there to remind them of. Just as God told Moses to make the brazen serpent on the pole. It was only a problem centuries later when some people started worshiping it as an idol, not when it was used by God to heal people by looking upon it. Num 21:8 Then the LORD said to Moses, "Make a fiery serpent, and set it on a standard; and it shall come about, that everyone who is bitten, when he looks at it, he will live." Num 21:9 And Moses made a bronze serpent and set it on the standard; and it came about, that if a serpent bit any man, when he looked to the bronze serpent, he lived. See also the bronze oxen which supported the brazen sea in the Temple. 2 Kings 16:17 They were not idols either. Emmaus |
