Bible Question:
Matthew 28:19-20 is the great commission. We are to go, we are to make disciple, we are to baptize and we are to teach to obey. What does it mean to teach to obey? |
Bible Answer: "teach to obey" is probably not the best translation of that text. The NASB says "go... make disciples...baptize...teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you..." The bacic idea is that where ever you go, as you go, you are to teach, baptize, and help others to be followers of Christ just as you are a follower of Christ. But with this it is important to remember that context is everything. You need to see what the context of the passage is, then the context of the rest of the book of Matthew, then the context of the New and Old Testaments or the Bible as a whole. In other words, you don't want to just take this passage and "run with it". If you did this then you might not apply other scripture that tells us to be patient with everyone and to ask God for wisdom in speaking with others and what about the teaching that everyone is appointed with a different role having different gifts and abilities. There are also so many other principles and ideas that need to be heeded like that of taking time to learn and study and prepare before trying to communicate God's word to those who might not have ever heard it and to those who have. Anyway, I hope this helps. Sorry it was so long; this was my first time on this site. Sam |
