Bible Question: Luke 14:26 If any man come to me, and hate not his father, mother, and wife, and children, and brothers and sisters and life also, he cannot be my desciple. Describe this verse |
Bible Answer: Jesus was simply saying that nothing can come between you and God - no family members nor the instinct of self-preservation Think of the boldness Jesus exhibits! He commands nothing short of ultimate commitment, and we give it to Him - why? Not because it is something we have to do, but it is something that we want to do. Because of love. When we know the love of Jesus; when we are in a love-relationship with Him, only then can we be committed to Him like this. Napoleon once said: "I know men; and I tell you that Jesus Christ is no mere man. Between him and every other person in the world there is no possible term of comparison. Alexander [the Great], Caesar, Charlemagne, and I have founded empires. But on what did we rest the creations of our genius? Upon force. Jesus Christ founded his empire upon love; and this hour millions of men would die for him." Hate is a strong word, but that is exactly how it might seem to family members or friends when we put Jesus in front of them. |
