Bible Answer: It is interesting that the Republican party came into being in the 1850s by a group of people coming out of the Whig party. At that time the Democratic party was pro-slavery. The Whigs kept avoiding taking up a position on this issue for fear of diseffecting some potential supporters. The Republican party was specifically formed as a reaction to this equivocation by the Whigs. Republicans wanted to change the laws of the land to insure the abolition of slavery. They wanted to form a loud voice that could speak for the slaves who could not speak for themselves. Where are the Whigs today? Today we are in a similar struggle. The Democrats are pro-abortion. The Republican party has been fairly consistently anti-abortion. However, some, fearing that some potential supporters will be dissefected, have said that the Republican party should open its arms to people on both sides of the issue. Don't they know their history? We must continue to speak for those who cannot speak. We must fight for the rights of the unempowered. If we cannot do it as Republicans, we will form a new party. Meanwhile, let us pray for that small minority whose right to life is being denied daily. |
