Bible Question: I have been thinking about the Bible translations. There are so many, but the main question is in reference to Hebrew to English. When it happened, who translated, and what people or events may have had an influence on the way a word was translated or even changed. |
Bible Answer: First understand there are many translations. Hebrew to Greek, Greek to Latin and etc. The difference in translations we see today come from two factors. Basic manuscripts used and human interpretative ability. Many times there are no direct word of word available to accurately translate a word. Therefore the translator must choose a word he considers best renders the meaning of the original. To do that effectively translators must be schooled and have an understanding of basic theology. In that process prejudices and opinions are added or developed. The other factor is the basic manuscripts. While the manuscript more or less reflect each other there are differences. These differences rarely contradict each other but they do cast different light upon subjects from time to time. If you stay with the basic four KJV, NKJV, NIV, or the NASB you will read an accurate representation of the true word of God. I have in years past changed my list of the basic four to include the ESV and NLT both of which I consider excellent representations of God’s word and accomplish what they set out to do. Let me add a point many will disagree with but I fail to believe God allowed any societal or generational factors into the Bible that would modify our understanding of it. We may not all be farmers or know the ins and outs of threshing wheat but we can understand enough to let the word speak to us. I do not believe we should ever discount a passage of scripture as applying only to that place and time. EdB |
