Bible Question:
I am doing a bible study on the book of Judges. Topic of discussion is Judges 4 and it talks about putting your faith in a person and not GOD. It talks about Deborah chastening Barek for not going by himself to battle. I had this very question and wanted to know if there was anywhere else in the bible that confirms this scripture/chapter to be a scripture that teaches that a person who is commanded by GOD (through another person) and it displeases GOD. Or if this is not the point of the scripture let me know, I realize some scriptures are sometimes meant to give you a background or thorough knowledge of something bigger not necessarily there to pull something out of context. I mean it clearly states that Deborah was not pleased with his decision, but yet he was commended or used as an example of a person showing faith in Hebrews 11:32. If you are talking to a group of teenagers and telling them to have faith in GOD but they point out this scripture and say, the person was still commended for his duties in Hebrews 11:23, what is your answer. thanks for your help in my quest for biblical knowledge. God Bless |
Bible Answer: Hi Noveta, You've asked a very good question! When you look at those named in Hebrews 11, many of them had major downfalls, times that they were not acting according to faith. But this is the grace of our God, that He remembers the good, and not the bad. Ezekiel 18:21-22 But the wicked, if he will turn from all his sins which he has done, and keep all My statutes, and do justice and righteousness, living he shall live; he shall not die. (22) All his transgressions that he has done, they shall not be recalled to him in his righteousness which he has done; he shall live. And so with these, there works of faith are what is accounted to them, not their works of unrighteousness. And so it will be with us as well. 1 Corinthians 3:12-15 And if anyone builds on this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, grass, straw, (13) the work of each will be revealed; for the Day will make it known, because it is revealed in fire; and the fire will prove the work of each, what sort it is. (14) If the work of anyone which he built remains, he will receive a reward. (15) If the work of anyone shall be consumed, he shall suffer loss; but he will be saved, but so as through fire. Jesus saves us, and being saved, we are His forever. One of the effects of being re-born is that we now want to obey our Lord more and more. And as we struggle with accounting the "old man" dead, one of the factors to consider is that one day everything we did on our own will be burned away, and everything we did in the Lord will remain. How much do you want to remain? Even though Barak was weak in the way you have said, he nonetheless went to battle. And as the Lord had said, the victory was credited to a woman, but Barak still received credit for the part he played. We are commanded to serve. Even if we only serve a little bit, we still receive for what we did. But better to serve will all we have. I hope this helps! Love in Christ, Mark |
