Bible Question: I have to give a talk on the song of deborah and wondered if anyone could give me their thoughts. I was thinking of comparing with Psalm 18 which is a song of victory of David when God gave hime rest from his enemies. Clearly messianic overtones and a prototypical of the song of the redeemed at the return of Christ. The song of Deborah is probably the same. Any other pointers. I need answers before 18th May 04. Thanks. |
Bible Answer: JonW, Look at the narrative description of the death of Sisera at the hand of Jael(4:17-22) and the description in Deborah's song (5:24-30). Why the descepencies in the details. The song also seems to focus on the gore and brutality of the killing and makes it more meoldramtic in its details. Generally, Deborah fits the pattern of the heroes of Judges. They are all seriously flawed. Sinful heros for a sinful people. The people in a way get the kind of heros and Judges they deserve. Deborahs's song is not on the same level as most of the Psalms or even the song after the crossing of there Red Sea in Exodus 25 or the song in Deuteronomy 32. Emmaus This is a somewhat different take on Deborah and her song than most, but these are all points of which various commentators have taken note. Emmaus |
