AMPLIFIED 2015 | Judges 12:6 they said to him, "Then say 'Shibboleth.'" And he said, "Sibboleth," for he could not pronounce it correctly. Then they seized him and killed him at the fords of the Jordan. At that time forty-two thousand of the Ephraimites fell. |
Bible Question (short): Distinguishing accents in Jewish tribes? |
Question (full): Was this accent obvious in only the Ephraimite tribe or did the other Israelite tribes also have accents in their speech? If so, when did these accents arise in the history of the Israelites? It is obvious in Judges 12:5-6 that the tribe of Ephraim shared a distinguishing characteristic amongst their brothers in how they enunciated their words, or at least the word "Shibboleth." Also, what does the word 'Shibboleth' mean? |
