NASB | Judges 12:6 then they would say to him, "Say now, 'Shibboleth.'" But he said, "Sibboleth," for he could not pronounce it correctly. Then they seized him and slew him at the fords of the Jordan. Thus there fell at that time 42,000 of Ephraim. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | Judges 12:6 they said to him, "Then say 'Shibboleth.'" And he said, "Sibboleth," for he could not pronounce it correctly. Then they seized him and killed him at the fords of the Jordan. At that time forty-two thousand of the Ephraimites fell. |
Bible Question: Was this accent obvious in only the Ephraimite tribe or did the other Israelite tribes also have accents in their speech? If so, when did these accents arise in the history of the Israelites? It is obvious in Judges 12:5-6 that the tribe of Ephraim shared a distinguishing characteristic amongst their brothers in how they enunciated their words, or at least the word "Shibboleth." Also, what does the word 'Shibboleth' mean? |
Bible Answer: Nolan, Just like we have accents in our country, as well as other nations - the Israelites had accents. As far as not being able pronounce the word, it is like my Japanese friends trying to pronounce my name. It comes out tsu-te-bi. I am not sure when it happened, I am not that old :-). Shibboleth menas flowing stream (Strong's 07641) and Sibboleth means an ear of grain or wheat (Strong's 05451). The Britannica says shibboleth is "word or saying used by adherents of a party, sect, or belief and usually regarded by others as empty of real meaning." You can see why I don't like the meanings of words in the English. |
