Bible Question:
Easter - what is its origin? Is it true Easter is derived from a Pagan celebration? |
Bible Answer: Yes, my friend, the origin is pagan. "The word (Easter) is of Saxon origin, Eastra, the goddess of spring, in whose honor sacrifices were offered about Passover time each year. By the eighth century Anglo-Saxons had adopted the name to designate the celebration of Christ's resurrection." (New Unger's Bible Dictionary) It is mentioned once in the Bibles I checked: "And when he had apprehended him, he put him in prison, and delivered him to four quaternions of soldiers to keep him; intending after Easter to bring him forth to the people." Acts 12:4 KJV. I posted this last night (Japan time) but it got lost. (Must be 'Mir' related :-) In Christ Jesus. |
